Barbra Streisand has opened up about her 27-year absence from the stage, confessing she shied away from the concert spotlight after becoming the target of a cultural backlash following her interracial kiss with Egyptian actor Omar Sharif in Funny Girl.
The Evergreen hitmaker famously forgot the lyrics to a number of songs during her big show in New York's Central Park in 1966, prompting her to take an extended hiatus from live public performances until announcing plans for her comeback in 1994. She has now blamed the embarrassing show mishap on the pressures of international fame and her concerns for her own safety after the fall-out from the release of a publicity photo for Funny Girl, which featured the Jewish star locking lips with Sharif as tensions heightened between Israel and its neighbouring Islamic states in the lead up to 1967's Six-Day War.
Her fears were compounded by the fact that New York Police Department bosses had to pull the majority of cops serving as security at the gig at the last minute due to a state visit by Soviet Union politician Alexei Kosygin.
She explains, "I was doing a concert in Central Park in front of a 150,000 people sitting on the grass. I was making Funny Girl at the time, and it was during a war, and Omar Sharif's movies were banned because he was kissing me. "So I was scared... Then we were supposed to have 300 guys (police officers at the concert) and some big Russian guy... Kosygin, I think, came to town and they took 270 cops away, so we had 30 cops and it was scary, put it that way. "So I forgot words to three of my songs and I wasn't cute about it, I was not charming. I totally spaced out... It's show business. Aren't you supposed to be cute and hum? Nothing... And so I didn't sing again for 27 years."

Foster has now moved out of the home the couple shared in Buckinghamshire, England, according to The Sun on Sunday newspaper.

He tells Us Weekly magazine, "I want to do a rom-com with Melissa McCarthy. I even told her that at an award show, and she said, 'Yeah! Let's do it!'"

Funnyman Mel Brooks has left his mark on Hollywood Boulevard by adding a fake finger to his hand and footprint ceremony on Monday (08Sep14). The actor/director made no mention of his prank as he kneeled down and pressed his hands into the cement outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre, but he revealed all during an appearance on U.S. chat show Conan on Monday night - and showed off his fake sixth digit on his right hand.
He said, "I wanted to do something just a little different, so I got another finger."
He added, "Somebody's gonna come in from Des Moines, Iowa and say, 'Mother... Does Mel Brooks have six fingers?'"
The ceremony was held to mark the 40th anniversary of his film Young Frankenstein.
British actor and comedian James Corden is preparing to relocate to America after officially landing the role as the new host of TV's The Late Late Show. The Begin Again star will take over from fellow Brit Craig Ferguson, who will depart the programme after nine years as host in December (14).
Monday's (08Sep14) announcement from CBS network bosses comes a month after reports initially surfaced revealing Corden was the frontrunner for the job, and the 36 year old can't believe his luck.
A statement released by Corden reads: "I can't describe how thrilled and honoured I am to be taking over from the brilliant Craig Ferguson.
"To be asked to host such a prestigious show on America's No. 1 (sic) network is hugely exciting. I can't wait to get started, and will do my very best to make a show America will enjoy."
Corden is no stranger to U.S. audiences - he won a Tony Award in 2012 for his star turn in Broadway show One Man, Two Guvnors, while he also appeared in the 2006 film adaptation of The History Boys, and landed a role alongside Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo in comedy drama Begin Again, which was released earlier this year (14).
He is also set to hit the big screen as The Baker in the highly-anticipated Into the Woods movie musical, which will hit theatres in the U.S. at Christmas (25Dec14), and American cinema audiences will also be able to see him as Britain's Got Talent winner Paul Potts when hit 2013 biopic One Chance is released this autumn (14).
America's The Late Late Show airs Monday to Friday after The Late Show With David Letterman.
British singer Sam Smith's big break into the U.S. on TV series Saturday Night Live was marred when he found out his London flat had been burgled the same night. The Stay With Me hitmaker made his mark in his native U.K. in 2013 but was still a relative unknown when he was chosen to serve as the musical guest on the long-running comedy sketch show in March (14).
Following his performance, he seemingly became an overnight sensation, which Smith himself was hesitant to believe.
He tells the U.K.'s Daily Mirror, "I always thought if America was going to happen it would be two years, three years or after the second record. But everything happened at the same time - it was really weird.
"The minute I did Saturday Night Live everything exploded. I performed Stay With Me for seven million viewers. It is unheard of because the people they normally have on that show are Rihanna and Pharrell Williams. That made it more scary as they were taking a huge chance on me.
"Afterwards I was so relieved. It was the happiest I had ever been in my entire life. It felt like a groundbreaking moment."
However, Smith's big break was marred when he learned his London apartment, where he had been living for three years, had been broken in to.
Smith reveals, "They took champagne and that was it. I think they were classy burglars. I think they looked at my clothes and my size 12 shoes and thought, no. Now I'm in a nice new place with security gates, so I don't need to worry while I'm away."
Mark Wahlberg confirmed reports his brother Donnie and actress/model Jenny Mccarthy wed in Chicago, Illinois on Sunday (31Aug14) by tweeting his congratulations.
The couple teased the media in July (14) when announcing plans to wed in McCarthy's hometown of Chicago on 15 August, but reports suggest the nuptials took place in suburb St. Charles over the weekend - and groom Wahlberg's movie star brother was a no-show. He may have missed the wedding, but Mark made an effort to congratulate his brother on his big day, tweeting, "Congratulations@DonnieWahlberg and @JennyMcCarthy, so happy for you both today."
The actor, his wife Rhea Durham and their kids also filmed an Instagram video congratulating the newlyweds and posted it online, revealing they were celebrating daughter Ella's 11th birthday in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile in St. Charles, McCarthy's former The View co-star Sherri Shepherd was on hand for the ceremony at the Hotel Baker, as well as Wahlberg's New Kids on the Block bandmates Jordan Knight and Danny Wood, according to local newspaper The Courier-News.
The wedding is the second for both stars - Wahlberg has two sons from his nine-year marriage to Kim Fey, which ended in divorce in 2008, and McCarthy shares a son, Evan, with her ex John Asher. They divorced in 2005.
Mark Wahlberg has no plans to attend his brother Donnie Wahlberg's wedding to Jenny Mccarthy this weekend (30-31Aug14).
Donnie is reportedly set to wed the former The View co-host in New York on Saturday (30Aug14) but his younger brother Mark will not be in attendance. Reports suggested Mark and McCarthy have a frosty relationship but his representative has denied the claims.
The Fighter star cannot make the ceremony because he will be in Los Angeles throwing a birthday party for his daughter Ella, who will turn 11 next week (01Sep14).
