Ed Sheeran's new album X has broken Spotify's weekly streaming record in Britain.
The British singer/songwriter's sophomore release has overtaken Daft Punk's Random Access Memories to score the highest number of online listens in the U.K. in a seven-day period.
Sheeran's X broke the 6.3 million mark during the first week after its debut on 23 June (14), exceeding Daft Punk's previous record of around 6.2 million.
X also became Britain's fastest selling album of 2014 last week (end28Jun14) after shifting 182,000 copies.
Justin Bieber and his fellow pop star Cody Simpson are joining forces in a recording studio. The Australian singer took to Twitter.com on Wednesday (11Jun14) to tell his fans he has spent some time collaborating with the Baby hitmaker on a new song.
He writes, "chill studio session last night with @justinbieber. wrote a beautiful guitar track. able to relate when it comes to love & women. good sht!" Bieber also retweeted a photo taken by engineer-producer Josh Gudwin, which shows the two singers in the studio as Bieber intently listens to Simpson playing guitar.
The news comes months after Bieber revealed he worked with another teen singer, Austin Mahone, after the two met up at a recording studio in April (14).
Pop star Austin Mahone is urging critics to listen to his music before comparing him to Justin Bieber, because assumptions about their similarities are "obnoxious".
The What About Love hitmaker landed his first record deal after being discovered on YouTube.com, just like Bieber, but the 18 year old insists that's where the similarities end. He says, "I can kind of see where they're coming from, but at the same time, it's kind of obnoxious. "They see a young kid who sings and dances and... they're like, 'Oh, another Justin Bieber'. Like, you don't even know. You don't know me. You don't know my music. You're just making assumptions."
Ironically, Mahone hit the studio with Bieber in April (14) to record a new song, which they have yet to release. Mahone's comments emerge as a racial slur controversy threatens to derail Bieber's career after two videos, filmed when he was around 14 or 15, surfaced online, featuring the Baby singer using the N-word in a racist joke and singing about joining notorious hate group the Ku Klux Klan. He has apologised twice for his controversial behaviour as a young teen, which he claimed was "a reckless and immature mistake".
Meanwhile, Bieber has also found himself in legal trouble in recent months following a DUI arrest in Florida earlier this year (14) and allegations he was involved in an assault on a limousine driver in his native Canada in December (13).
Pop star Austin Mahone has been given the honour of performing America's National Anthem at Game 1 of the National Basketball Association Finals in his native San Antonio, Texas. The singer will take centre stage at the AT&T Center on Thursday (05Jun14) before his hometown team the San Antonio Spurs take on the defending champions, the Miami Heat.
"One time I accidentally kissed one of my fans on the lips during a meet and greet. She asked if she could have a kiss on the cheek, so I turned and she turned at the same time, and we swiped lips." Teen heartthrob Austin Mahone recalls a lucky fan's brush with her idol.
Rihanna was the toast of the inaugural iHeartRadio Music Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday (01May14), despite arriving late and missing out on accepting the new prizegiving's first ever trophy.
The Umbrella singer found herself stuck in rush-hour traffic and wasn't even at the Shrine Auditorium when she won the night's Hip Hop/R&B Song of the Year for Pour it Up. She arrived shortly afterwards and was present to pick up her awards for Best Fan Army, Artist of the Year and Song of the Year (Stay). Sporting a gothic look with blue lipstick, a black lace dress, jewelled crucifixes and a new Tank Girl-style hairdo, Rihanna accepted the latter trophy by thanking radio producers for playing the ballad, stating, "This record would never have been this big if it wasn't for you." And accepting her Artist of the Year honour at the end of the night, she added, "Shout out to everybody who has ever worked on my project. I know I'm a pain in the a** - but it's worth it!"
It was also a huge night for Pharrell Williams, who picked up the first-ever iHeartRadio Innovator Award. Presenter Gwen Stefani called her pal "the coolest guy ever", before a series of tributes from stars like Lady Gaga, Usher, Beyonce, Shakira, Oprah Winfrey, and Rita Ora flashed up on video screens. The man of the hour then performed a hits medley, including Blurred Lines, Get Lucky and Happy. Accepting his Innovator Award, the singer/songwriter/producer thanked his wife Helen Lasichanh and son Rocket and added, "I never dreamt in a million years that I'd be standing here as an artist... All I did was write the songs and you guys (fans) did all the heavy lifting, all the hard work, all those millions of views on YouTube... Thank you guys so much for lifting me so high."
Pitbull opened the show by performing Wild Wild Love and Timber without his duet partner Kesha, who has yet to perform for the first time following a stint in rehab earlier this year (14). The track won the couple the Best Collaboration trophy.
Performance highlights also included sets from Bastille, Ariana Grande, Shakira, Kendrick Lamar and 30 Seconds to Mars, who played City of Angels as frontman Jared Leto's accompanying short film featuring stars like Kanye West, Selena Gomez and Lindsay Lohan talking about their love of Los Angeles flashed up on video screens on either side of the stage.
But the night's talking point came when Usher showed off his Michael Jackson moves as he danced along to the King of Pop's new single Love Never Felt So Good, which debuted during the ceremony. As images of the late Thriller star appeared on video screens on the stage and throughout the audience, Usher and a gang of dancers performed the pop superstar's moon walk and other signature moves.
The iHeartRadio Music Awards telecast also featured a series of pre-taped anecdotes about L.A. from the likes of Chris Martin, John Legend, Steven Tyler, Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga, Rita Ora, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Iggy Azalea. More than 60 million U.S. radio listeners voted for the awards.
The full list of prizewinners is: Hip Hop/R&B Song of the Year - Pour it Up by Rihanna Best Collaboration - Timber by Pitbull & Kesha Best Lyrics - Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus Best New Artist - Lorde Best Fan Army - Rihanna's Navy Song of the Year - Stay by Rihanna Alternative Rock Song of the Year - Demons by Imagine Dragons Young Influencer Award - Ariana Grande Instagram Award - Austin Mahone EDM (Electronic Dance Music) Song of the Year - Wake Me Up by Avicii & Aloe Blacc Country Song of the Year - Boys 'Round Here by Blake Shelton Artist of the Year - Rihanna
Pop star Justin Bieber treated fellow singer Austin Mahone to a special meal on Thursday (03Apr14) in celebration of his 18th birthday. The Baby singer dined with Mahone and a group of pals at posh restaurant Nobu in Miami, Florida.
After the meal, Mahone took to Twitter.com to mark his final few hours as a 17 year old, writing, "Last 38 minutes of being 17!"
The pair has formed a friendship in recent months after collaborating on a new track. They were also spotted hitting the recording studio together earlier this week (beg31Mar14).
Singers Justin Bieber and Austin Mahone are preparing a real pop treat for their fans after hitting the studio together on Tuesday (01Apr14). The Baby hitmaker teased his Instagram.com followers early on Wednesday (02Apr14) by posting a photo of himself posing with Mahone and his pal's Cash Money Records boss Bryan 'Birdman' Williams and rapper Mack Maine.
Alongside the snap, he simply wrote, "New music", while Mahone was more forthcoming with his photo upload, captioning the shot, "What an amazing song last night..The world isn't ready! @justinbieber."
A source tells GossipCop.com, "Justin knew Austin has been in the studio working on his album and had a song he thought could be really perfect to do with Austin."
Mahone, who has long drawn comparisons to Bieber, was signed to a joint deal between Universal and Lil Wayne's label Young Money Entertainment and Birdman's Cash Money Records last year (13).
Bieber, who is also a Universal artist, previously recorded his 2012 hit Beauty and a Beat with another Young Money/Cash Money artist, Nicki Minaj.
