Catherine Zeta-Jones returned to the red carpet on Saturday (21Sep13) for the first-time since announcing her separation from husband Michael Douglas. The Welsh actress attended a movie event in China to launch a new film studio.
Actor Tommy Lee Jones put in such a realistic portrayal of Douglas Macarthur it was like having the famed war general on set, according to his co-star Matthew Fox. The Men in Black star takes the role of the iconic World War II U.S. Army officer in hard-hitting military drama Emperor, and Fox, who plays a fellow leader in the film, was stunned at his colleague's performance.
Fox has revealed most of the shoot had been completed before Jones arrived to film his scenes, and his acting was so lifelike the cast and crew were convinced the real general was on set.
Fox tells U.K. morning show Daybreak, "I felt that there was no other actor I could imagine playing MacArthur. MacArthur is such an iconic military figure for Americans in the 20th Century and so I really felt that he was the perfect guy to play him and was going to bring a gravitas to that role. I really enjoyed it.
"He came at the end of the shoot so we had shot a huge portion of the film, and it was really like MacArthur was showing up in our world."
General MacArthur was an instrumental figure in the U.S.' military campaign in the Pacific and oversaw the surrender of Japan in 1945, which marked the end of World War II.

Michael Douglas has been photographed moving his belongings out the New York home he shared with his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones. The Hollywood couple announced the separation last month (Aug13) after weeks of speculation about the state of its marriage, but Douglas subsequently insisted the split is merely temporary.
However, the Wall Street star has now been seen hauling suitcases out of the Manhattan pad he shared with his partner and their two children.
Douglas was spotted dragging a large red case and several bags out of the apartment and down the street.
Michael Douglas' ex-wife Diandra Douglas is facing allegations she owes U.S. authorities more than $1 million (£666,667) in unpaid taxes. Diandra, who received a reported $45 million (£30 million) from the Wall Street star back in 2000, is said to owe America's Internal Revenue Service in excess of $1.2 million (£800,000).
Editors at the New York Post's gossip column Page Six report authorities have filed a lien against her over the bill, which dates from 2007 through to 2009.
A source tells the publication the tax discrepancy is related to a property deal and that Diandra's accountants "expect this will be resolved in her favour".
The news comes just days after Douglas' current marriage problems became public knowledge. He recently separated from Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, but Douglas has since insisted the split is merely "temporary".

A week after his separation from wife Catherine Zeta-Jones was announced, a solo Douglas was beaming as he picked up the accolade at the publication's annual Men of the Year ceremony, held at the Royal Opera House in the British capital.
Douglas, who flew in from the Venice Film Festival in Italy, was handed the prize by Samuel L. Jackson, while Sir Elton John was given the Genius award by terminally-ill rocker Wilko Johnson, and Doctor Who actor Matt Smith handed Noel Gallagher the Icon trophy.
Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens picked up Most Stylish Man, Pharrell Williams got lucky landing Performer of the Year, rockers Arctic Monkeys nabbed Band of the Year and Lou Reed was hailed the Inspiration of the Year.
Accepting her trophy for Woman of the Year, former Harry Potter actress Emma Watson joked, "Given the perilousness in the journey from child star to adult, any award with woman in the title is frankly a relief!"
Watson's My Week with Marilyn co-star Eddie Redmayne was also feted, taking home the Breakthrough Award, while Simon Pegg and Nick Frost were crowned the Comedians of the Year, and newsman Piers Morgan nabbed TV Personality of the Year.
Michael Douglas insists his marriage to Catherine Zeta-Jones is far from over - they're just taking a break. The movie star and the Welsh Oscar winner announced their separation last week (ends30Aug13) after months of speculation about the state of their marriage, but Douglas, who is solo at the Berlin Film Festival in Germany, has told reporters that things are "fine" between himself and his wife.
Promoting his new Liberace biopic, Behind the Candelabra, at the festival, Douglas said, "My wife and I are fine. We take a temporary separation, but the press, it gives you stuff to write about."
Zeta-Jones, 43, has yet to address the separation.
Catherine Zeta-Jones' close friend and maid of honour has expressed concerns for the actress' mental wellbeing as she tries to cope with the breakdown of her marriage to Michael Douglas. The Wall Street star and his Traffic actress wife announced on Wednesday (28Aug13) that they are "taking some time apart" to work on their 13-year marriage.
The separation comes after a turbulent few years for the couple, with Douglas undergoing treatment for throat cancer in 2010 and Zeta-Jones seeking professional help for an ongoing battle with bipolar disorder.
Now Anna Walker, one of the Welsh beauty's closest confidantes, has admitted she worries that the stress of their split could drive the actress into a deep depression.
Walker tells Britain's Mail on Sunday, "The next few weeks will be very tough and I'm very worried about her. This is a very traumatic time and her mental health could be adversely affected.
"I'm sure it's not been easy for her to cope with the stress of Michael's illness. She's just had another round of treatment for her bipolar and if she can keep that in check under all this stress it will be a miracle.
"Her mother Pat is with her at the moment, so I know she's in good hands. And nowadays there is very good medication that can help. It will have hit her very hard because she definitely believes marriage is for once in a lifetime."
Michael Douglas stepped out with his wedding ring on as he returned to the French festival where he first met his estranged wife Catherine Zeta-Jones. The Hollywood actor joined filmmaker Steven Soderbergh on Friday (30Aug13) to open the 39th annual Deauville American Film Festival with a screening of their Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra.
It was Douglas' first public appearance since news of his marriage split from the Oscar winner hit headlines, but his gold wedding band was clearly visible as he held up a microphone to speak to the audience.
After greeting the crowd in French, Douglas admitted he is feeling good in an apparent reference to the couple's separation and his cancer battle in 2010.
He said, "People have been kindly asking how I'm doing. Well, I put on a suit tonight - one that I can't come close to buttoning - so everything must be OK."
The French festival, which celebrates American movies, is where Douglas and Zeta-Jones met in August 1998.
