Guardians Of The Galaxy has returned to the top of the U.S. box office to become the highest-grossing film of the summer (14). The superhero film, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Vin Diesel, earned $17.6 million (GBP10.4 million) in its fourth weekend on release (23-24Aug14), taking its total to $251.9 million (GBP148.2 million).
Coming in at number two is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with $16.8 million (GBP9.9 million), while Chloe Grace Moretz's If I Stay takes the third spot with $16.4 million (GBP9.6 million).
Rounding out the top five are Let's Be Cops and When the Game Stands Tall.
A 33-year-old man has been arrested and charged with aggravated battery for allegedly biting two revellers during the Arctic Monkeys' set at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, Illinois on 1 August (14). Sergio Vicenteno has been accused of the random attacks, according to Cook County State Attorneys Office spokesman Steve Campbell. He has not yet entered a plea.
Prosecutors claim Vicenteno bit one concertgoer on the shin, and then attacked the man's friend, Ben Lenet, when he tried to intervene.
Another friend chased Vicenteno away.
Lenet, whose skin was broken by the bite, has been tested for hepatitis and HIV and is currently on a course of antibiotics.
Jimmy Fallon is tired of bad news. We feel the same way as The Tonight Show host. Bad news kind of sucks. So, Jimmy went out and asked some local NBC News anchors to start reporting good news! Or at least, news that they wish was real. These reports are spreading joy in a new segment, "I've Got Good News and Good News."
Watch Jimmy’s happy news report below:
These reports might be made up, but they’re not all false. Turtles and dance parties are, in fact, awesome. I'm also very happy to hear that ghosts cannot hurt me. Here’s to hoping the news starts getting a little less depressing and lot happier, like this report. Thanks for that Jimmy!
Steven Spielberg is developing a TV series based on his 2002 blockbuster Minority Report. The acclaimed director's sci-fi thriller, loosely based on the short story of the same name by author Philip K. Dick, starred Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell, and grossed $358 million (£216 million) at the worldwide box office.
Now Spielberg is hoping to find success with a small screen version, according to TheWrap.com.
The director, who has recruited Godzilla writer Max Borenstein to pen the script, currently serves as the executive producer on sci-fi TV series Falling Skies, Extant and Under the Dome.
X-Men: Days Of Future Past director Bryan Singer made good on a bet with his assistant after agreeing to get a tattoo if the film crossed the $700 million (GBP422 million) mark at the global box office. The latest X-Men movie opened in cinemas in May (14) to overwhelming success, raking in $110 million (GBP69 million) in the U.S. in its debut weekend alone.
When the superhero film passed the $500 million (GBP301.5 million) benchmark, Singer's assistant inked the official round X-Men symbol on his calf, and challenged his boss to do the same if and when the film passed $700 million.
Singer shared a photo of the new tattoo on Instagram.com last month (Jul14), and wrote, "My assistant kept his end of the bet. Tattoo at 500mil. Sucka (sic)! Yet now we are passed 700 it's (screenwriter Simon) Kinberg and my turn."
And on Wednesday (20Aug14), Singer made good on his wager, posting a photo of himself getting inked at Los Angeles' Shamrock Social Club tattoo parlour.
Offering moral support, Sir Patrick Stewart, who plays Professor X in the franchise, was on hand during the session to observe as the tattoo artist got to work on Singer's calf.
The director added the caption, "Getting my X-Tattoo with @sirpatstew witnessing midnight," while Stewart tweeted, "I'm great support staff."
The success of the film is a real tonic for Singer, who pulled out of promoting the movie after he was accused of sexually assaulting a teenager. The case has since been dismissed.
Beyonce and Jay Z have been cleared of accusations they violated U.S. sanctions with their controversial visit to Cuba. The superstar couple headed to Havana in April, 2013 for what appeared to be a special break to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary, and the trip sparked outrage as the U.S. government bans citizens from travelling to Cuba for tourism purposes.
The stars later claimed they had been given a special travel permit to visit Cuba for academic and cultural purposes, and now an official investigation has ruled the couple did have the correct documentation.
The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Inspector General has issued a nine-page report which concludes, "Based on our review of available documentation and applicable regulations and guidance, we found no indication that U.S. sanctions were violated."
A number of U.S. politicians called for a probe into the stars' trip to Cuba, and Jay Z hit back by addressing the controversy in a song titled Open Letter.
It’s been 4 years since Easy A premiered. That means we’ve spent the last 4 years without a new Amanda Bynes movie. Don’t even get me started on how long it’s been since she was on TV. She was the queen of Nickelodeon in the late 90’s/early 00’s. If you’ve been suffering withdrawals from her young comedic genius, look no further.
