The Ghost star lost his battle with the killer disease a year ago (14Sep09) and Niemi has taken it upon herself to school others about the illness as the new spokeswoman for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
And she has marked Tuesday's poignant date by kick-starting the charity drive for Be a Hero in the Fight Against Pancreatic Cancer: Know it. Fight it. End it.
The campaign features videos and personal messages from Niemi and she is honoured to be part of the Action Network, reports People.com.
She says, "It's a merciless disease. If Patrick being sick can help someone else, it's the highest possible honour I could help him have."
Franke Previte, who won an Oscar for the anthem Time of My Life, will travel to the scenic set of the 1987 movie hit, for an upcoming fan festival next week (17-18Sep10), and he plans to use the occasion and the sad anniversary of his friend's death to raise funds for Swayze's cancer charity.
Previte has teamed up with bosses at the Mountain Lake Hotel in Pembroke, Virginia, where iconic scenes from the movie were shot, to auction off his handwritten lyrics for the songs on eBay.com
He also plans to release demo versions of Time of My Life and Hungry Eyes, another Dirty Dancing favourite, as digital downloads on iTunes, to raise money for the Patrick Swayze Pancreas Cancer Research Fund.
The songwriter says, "Patrick was a really good guy. That tender guy in the film is really who he is. That's what saddened me.
"I know this song meant a lot to him, and it's been such a lucky thing for me. I'd be grateful if I could do something else with it that would do some good."
During his trip to Virginia, Previte will also visit a memorial to Swayze that was erected at the hotel last November (09), and take part in festival activities with fans at nearby Lake Lure, North Carolina where Swayze and co-star Jennifer Grey danced in the movie.
Participants in the two-day festival will get the chance to recreate scenes from the film and take part in dance lessons, contests and a cast lookalike competition.
The star, who lost his battle with cancer earlier this year (Sept09), trained as a ballet dancer before he began his career on Broadway with roles in hit musicals Grease and Chicago. His fancy footwork helped land him his breakthrough film role in 1987 movie Dirty Dancing.
Swayze's widow, Lisa Niemi, attended the annual fundraiser for Career Transition for Dancers, a charity which helps dancers whose careers have been cut short by injury.
She took to the stage to collect the Rolex Dance Award, and in a tearful acceptance speech she told the crowd her husband is now "dancing with the angels."
Swayze died from pancreatic cancer in September (09) at the age of 57.
The attorney who married Kill Bill star David Carradine and his wife Annie at their friend Michael Madsen's home is calling on the media not to jump to conclusions about the actor's sudden death.
Carradine, 72, was found dead in a hotel room in Bangkok, Thailand, where he was shooting a new movie -- and initial reports suggest he hanged himself.
The actor's manager, Chuck Binder, insists Carradine died of natural causes, but police officials insist a hotel maid had found Carradine dead in a wardrobe with a rope around his neck and body on Thursday morning.
The late star's longtime attorney and friend, Vicki Roberts, who conducted the actor's fifth wedding ceremony in December 2004, is hoping the truth will prove Carradine did not commit suicide.
She tells WENN, "I would also hope that there would be a full investigation before any conclusions are drawn."
Roberts adds, "I have known David Carradine and his wife Annie for many, many years and I was honored to have performed their marriage ceremony in 2004 at the home of Michael Madsen. My deepest condolences go out to Annie and the family."
