Sir Elton John left guests in "disbelief" by putting in an unannounced performance at Neil Patrick Harris' recent nuptials. The former How I Met Your Mother star wed longtime partner David Burtka in a castle in Perugia, Italy earlier this month (06-07Sep14), and among those present for the intimate ceremony was the legendary singer, who is close friends with the newlyweds.
During an interview with U.S. TV personality Meredith Vieira on her talk show on Thursday (18Sep14), Harris revealed that John was never meant to be the main attraction during their reception.
Harris explained, "He and (husband) David (Furnish) and their kids were coming as guests. And there was a piano player that was playing anyways, so I said, 'Would you want to just go up and play one song at some time?' And he said, 'Sure.'
"It turned into a much more involved thing - he sang three different songs. We kept it a secret so everyone that was there was just slackjawed in disbelief that Elton John was singing in a castle."
Harris described his big day as "fairy tale-ic", and that the ceremony turned out to be a much bigger to do than expected.
He added, "It wasn't super intentional. We wanted to have a destination wedding, so it eliminated having to invite hundreds of people... All of a sudden it turned into this really beautiful 50 person small intimate (ceremony)."

Neil Patrick Harris' son Gideon shunned his role as ring bearer at the actor's wedding to David Burtka in favour of becoming an "orange boy". The How I Met Your Mother star and his partner Burtka wed in a castle in Perugia, Italy over the weekend (06-07Sep14) and they decided to give their three-year-old twins special roles in the ceremony.
However, Gideon was not happy holding the rings and instead chose to hand out oranges to guests at the nuptials.
Sharing the news with viewers on U.S. morning show Live with Kelly & Michael on Monday (08Sep14), TV presenter Kelly Ripa, who was a guest at the event, explained, "(Daughter) Harper was going to be the flower girl and Gideon was going to be the ring bearer, and he said, 'I don't want to be the ring bearer!' And they said, 'OK, well, what do you want to be?' And he said, 'I want to be the orange boy.' And he passed out oranges to everybody as he came down the aisle...!
"He came up with it (the role) on his own. He had his little tux and his top hat and he was passing out oranges."
Ripa continued, "Later on, during the night, we were dancing (and) I said to him, 'Look, Gideon, I saved your orange because I'm going to keep it forever.' And he goes, 'Oh, you shouldn't! It's so delicious!'"
Ripa went on to reveal the "beautiful family affair" also included magic tricks, fireworks and a special toast from close friends Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish, who acknowledged the progress made in the global fight for equal rights for lesbian and gay couples.
She added, "(They) got up and said, 'You know, many, many years ago, this would not be possible. We're so thankful and grateful to everybody for supporting us and our families, and how our children (John and Furnish's sons and Harris and Burtka's kids) have each other to sort of look to each other as another example of a family like ours and how the definition of a family is changing, always.'"
Elton also thrilled guests by performing during the reception.

Actress Christina Hendricks was dropped by her talent agents after accepting a role on period drama Mad Men, because they were convinced the show would be a big flop. The 39 year old reveals she was advised against taking on the part of Joan Harris on the programme, set in the 1960s advertising world, but she decided to ignore her agents' concerns and follow her heart.
She tells Britain's The Guardian newspaper, "(My agency) said, 'It's a period piece, it's never going to go anywhere. We need you to make money and this isn't going to make money.' They ended up dropping me."
Hendricks' instincts proved to be correct - Mad Men, co-starring Jon Hamm, John Slattery and Elisabeth Moss, became a critical and commercial hit upon its premiere in 2007 and her role has earned her five Emmy Award nominations to date.
She adds, "I had been on several shows that were meant to be the big ones, that would go on forever, and they didn't. So there was no sure bet and I'd already taken a chance on them, and I felt, why not do the one you're in love with and take a chance on that?"
