A famous ink drawing of beloved children's character Winnie The Pooh has gone under the hammer in London for a record $503,200 (£314,500). The E.H. Shepard illustration, which depicts the honey-loving bear playing the game Poohsticks with characters Piglet and Christopher Robin, was published in author A.A. Milne's second book, The House At Pooh Corner, in 1928.
The artwork, titled For a long time they looked at the river beneath them, was part of a Sotheby's children's book auction this week (begs08Dec14) and sold for three times its estimate.
The high price set a new record for a Shepard drawing, previously just under $224,000 (£140,000), and earned the piece the title as the most expensive book illustration sold at auction.
Philip Errington, director of Sotheby's book department, tells the AFP, "It's an incredibly important piece, it's reproduced twice within The House at Pooh Corner, and I had great expectations that this would catch people's imagination but it exceeded all our expectations.
"We're very happy we've smashed those two world records."
A pencil drawing of the same image was snapped up in another Sotheby's sale last year (13) for $94,000 (£58,750).
Unbroken star Finn Wittrock's parents were not big fans of his hard-hitting new movie, because they were not prepared for his death scene or how rail-thin he would look. The actor's mother sobbed through much of the screening and then reprimanded her son for not warning her about the movie's most harrowing scenes.
He tells WENN, "My mum was like, 'Honey, if you don't warn me the next time I walk into a theatre that you are gonna die and I'm gonna have to cry and embarrass myself in front of loads of people, I will slap you across the face!'"
And his dad also struggled with some of the scenes in the new Angelina Jolie-directed film.
He adds, "My dad was most disturbed by seeing me thin. My dad hated it. He was like, 'When is this f**king movie gonna be over?'
"When you spend your whole life making sure your kids are fed, he like, really didn't like it."
Newlywed singer Solange Knowles and her husband Alan Ferguson celebrated their recent marriage by vacationing in Bahia, Brazil. Beyonce's younger sister shared a series of photos from the romantic getaway with fans on Instagram.com over the weekend (29-30Nov14), and alongside one shot of colourful houses in the town of Trancoso, she wrote, "Thank you Trancoso for being the most magical lil place to 'honey our moon'...Brazil could not have been kinder to us and our love..." The couple tied the knot in New Orleans, Louisiana on 16 November (14).
"We have more moments where I say, 'I’m going to be a better wife. I'm going to learn to cook'. And he (Brad) says, 'Oh, honey, know what you’re good at...' But I do like, 'No, no, no, I'm going to get this wife thing down'. He knows my limitations and where I’m a good wife and a good mom." Angelina Jolie is determined to be a "better" wife.
Angelina Jolie headed to London's Palace of Westminster on Monday (24Nov14) to show her support for political adviser Arminka Helic as she was introduced to the House of Lords. Baroness Helic, the Bosnian-born aide to former U.K. foreign secretary William Hague, was appointed to the upper house by Prime Minister David Cameron in August (14), and on Monday, she was officially welcomed into the House of Lords.
Jolie, who has worked closely with Hague in her role as a United Nations ambassador, was on hand to watch Helic take her seat on the Conservative Party bench as she swore allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II.
After the ceremony, the actress said, "I am very honoured to have been present at the introduction of my dear friend Lady Helic. I wouldn't have missed this day for the world."
Hague, who was recently appointed the Prime Minister's Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict, was also present for the formal introduction.
Helic is credited with helping to connect Jolie and Hague after handing the British politician a copy of the movie star's 2011 directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, which features a harrowing rape scene set during the Bosnian War.
The movie reportedly inspired Hague to make it his mission to bring about an end to sexual violence in war zones and he teamed up with Jolie for the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, which was held in London in June (14).
Angelina Jolie has reiterated her hopes of winding down acting roles in a bid to become a respected filmmaker.
The Maleficent star warned fans she was considering retirement earlier this year (14), and now she's determined to follow through with her threat to step out of the spotlight.
She tells the new issue of Du Jour magazine, she has never been "comfortable" in front of the camera, and when asked if she would ever give up acting completely, she responds, "Absolutely". She tells the publication, "I've never loved being in front of the camera. I didn't ever think I could direct, but I hope I'm able to have a career at it because I'm much happier."
Jolie made her directorial debut with 2011 film In the Land of Blood and Honey and her latest effort, Unbroken, is picking up Oscar buzz a month before its release.
She is currently shooting By The Sea with her husband Brad Pitt in Malta and then has Africa lined up.
Embattled Here Comes Honey Boo Boo star June Shannon makes a cameo appearance in the Dumb & Dumber sequel. The reality TV star, who confessed two of her daughters were fathered by a convicted sex offender last week (ends14Nov14), appears as the trailer park lover of Jeff Daniels' Harry Dunne character in a dream sequence.
Ashton Kutcher and Two And A Half Men creator Chuck Lorre got the last laugh in their ongoing spat with the show's former star Charlie Sheen in a new episode that aired in America on Thursday (13Nov14).
Sheen was fired from the comedy in 2011 following a public bust-up with Lorre, and Kutcher was brought in to replace him. The former leading man has recently hinted at a return to the series, which is now in its final season, revealing he has put forward a storyline for the last episode, that would include him - but both Lorre and his replacement have dismissed the idea.
Kutcher recently said, "I just kinda stopped listening to things that Charlie Sheen says. Charlie Sheen has become, like, a parent on Charlie Brown to me - it's like, 'Mwah, mwah, mwah...' And I just keep saying, 'Thank you for the great job...' I'm just gonna keep going to work and collecting the check."
Sheen was the butt of Lorre's joke on Thursday night's episode as Courtney Thorne-Smith's character stumbled into a scene drunk and wearing just a bra and jeans as Kutcher and co-star Jon Cryer's Alan Harper attempted to convince a visiting social worker they were ideal gay parents for an adopted baby.
When the puzzled adoption expert asked, "Who is this?" Kutcher's quick-thinking character Walden Schmidt responds, "This happens all the time. Tourists get an out-of-date map to celebrity homes... 'Honey, Charlie Sheen doesn't live here anymore!'"
U.S. reality TV star June Shannon has confessed two of her daughters were products of a romance with a convicted sex offender. The Here Comes Honey Boo Boo star has jeopardised the show's future following reports linking her to sex offender Mark McDaniel, who her daughter Anna claims molested her when she was a child.
And now, in a sensational TV interview which will air in America on Thursday evening (13Nov14), Shannon reveals Michael Anthony Ford, who was featured on a 2005 episode of reality TV drama To Catch a Predator, fathered two of her kids, Jessica, 17, and Lauryn, 14.
Opening up about the romance during a chat with Entertainment Tonight, she says, "It's about getting the truth out there. I have nothing to hide, I have nothing to lose."
Shannon also insists there is no romance between her and McDaniel, who was released from prison in March (14), revealing she only agreed to meet him at the request of her daughter Lauryn, who thought he was her dad.
She adds, "It was a conversation that she wanted her answers: what happened, why did he leave, you know, if he was her real father. He admitted to her, no. I had already told her that but, you know, she wanted to hear from both sides of the story."
Executives at TLC, who aired Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, announced they had cancelled the series on 24 October (14) amid the reports suggesting Shannon was dating McDaniel after splitting from her husband Mike Thompson.
