A tall, handsome leading man of early silents, Richard C. Travers (born Richard Lipp) came to the screen in the early 1910s with a background as an army medic and a stock company juvenile. Early in his career he worked exclusively for the Chicago-based Essanay company, mostly appearing in highly romantic melodramas. In many ways he was a more solemn forerunner of Douglas Fairbanks, swashbuckling his way through such popular vehicles as The Red Agatha (1914, which he also directed), The Grip of Circumstance (1914), The White Sister (1915), In the Palace of the King (1915), The Phantom Buccaneer (1915), and Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines (1916). Freelancing after the demise of Essanay, Travers played the "Other Man" in such melodramas as The Love Nest (1922), The Acquittal (1923), and Headwinds (1925).
