U.S. President Barack Obama has joined movie stars like Whoopi Goldberg, Samuel L. Jackson and Charlize Theron in paying tribute to the late, great Nelson Mandela following his death at the age of 95. South African President Jacob Zuma confirmed the sad news of the civil rights icon's death just before midnight local time on Thursday night (05Dec13) - not long after acclaimed new biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom premiered in London, with Prince William and his wife, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and members of Mandela's family in attendance.
The former president, who was affectionately known as Madiba, had battled health issues in recent years, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalisations.
Announcing the tragic news, President Zuma said, "He passed on peacefully in the company of his family... He is now resting. He is now at peace. Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father."
Zuma ordered all flags across the nation to be flown at half-mast from Friday (06Dec13) until Mandela is laid to rest at a state funeral.
Shortly after news of Mandela's death broke, President Obama held a press conference at the White House to deliver a touching tribute, stating, "He achieved more than could be expected of any man and today he has gone home."
He added, "We have lost one of the most influential, courageous and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this earth. He no longer belongs to us; he belongs to the ages."
Obama's predecessor George W. Bush added, "President Mandela was one of the great forces for freedom and equality of our time. He bore his burdens with dignity and grace, and our world is better off because of his example. This good man will be missed, but his contributions will live on forever."
British actor Idris Elba, who portrays Mandela in new movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom offered up a statement after hearing the sad news during the London premiere after party. It reads: "What an honour it was to step into the shoes of Nelson Mandela and portray a man who defied odds, broke down barriers, and championed human rights before the eyes of the world. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."
Meanwhile, South African actress Charlize Theron became one of the first celebrities to remember the legendary activist online, tweeting, "My thoughts and love go out to the Mandela family. Rest in Peace Madiba. You will be missed, but your impact on this world will live forever".
Ghost star Goldberg added, "I want 2give (sic) the world a hug I was told Mandeba (sic) just passed. Nelson Mandela R.I.P. Time for a well earned sleep.Condolences to his family", while Samuel L. Jackson posted, "Never met a better person in my life than Nelson Mandela. My sympathy to his family & his country".

Zoe Saldana, Khloe Kardashian, Kelly Osbourne, Anna Kendrick, Julianne Hough and Samuel L. Jackson were among the stars who turned out to watch Beyonce perform at Los Angeles' Staples Center on Tuesday (03Dec13).
Casting is a complicated business. You have to choose an actor with enough charisma and good looks to have audiences fall in love with them. You need someone with strong comedic or dramatic acting skills to deliver week after week. Then you have to factor in a person’s ability to handle the pressure, business, and the whole host of behind-the-scenes magic that goes into making television. But what if there is something else? Some shows can be utterly amazing and yet die a horrible death. Is it possible that some actors are just cursed?
Lowell is charming and has the perfect blend of approachability and sex appeal. Plus, he’s got dreamy blue eyes. And yet, he has starred in multiple failed shows. He started his television career on Life As We Know It. He played an awkward boyfriend to Kelly Osbourne’s buxom, outspoken high school girl. He was added as a series regular to Veronica Mars which was soon cancelled. Also, sad to say, Private Practice seemed to find its stride after they killed off his sensitive, junkie-loving midwife character, Dell. His upcoming series Enlisted looks like it may be quickly dispatched. If it was just a military ensemble comedy it could take off like the sleeper hit Brooklyn Nine-Nine. But the show looks like it has a bizarre Three Stooges sibling angle combined with its military premise. It brings flashbacks to the ill-conceived Goodwin Games.
Perry starred in Aaron Sorkin's follow up to The West Wing, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Despite his success with Friends, Perry has had more than his share of failed series under his belt. Before starring on the popular '90s sitcom, he starred in multiple failed vehicles including Sydney with Valerie Bertenelli, Second Chance, and Home Free. He recently starred on the failed series Mr. Sunshine that was cancelled so fast it might be confused for the follow up, Go On. Unfortunately, Go On was actually a halfway decent series with a uniquely emotion-driven premise. Hopefully he can find a series that will exorcise Chandler Bing from his repertoire.
Gorham is talented, funny, charming, and has a set of abs like nobody’s business. He has starred on multiple amazing series with cult-followings that ended prematurely. He starred in Ryan Murphy’s first series, the high school comedy Popular. He played a time-traveling astronaut in the series Odyssey 5 and an enhanced man, Jake 2.0. He was in the suspense series Harper’s Island and the medical drama Medical Investigation. He was also one of the best guest stars on the prematurely canceled Ugly Betty. He even tried his hand at sitcoms in the hilarious sitcom Out Of Practice with Ty Burrell. He may have broken his losing streak with the Piper Perabo spy series, Alias Covert Affairs. He plays blind tech expert Auggie Anderson and the series has lasted four seasons.
Harrison is a gifted comedian and the right blend of awkward geek and dreamboat. However, he hasn’t been able to get a show to last. He starred in two seasons of the very funny series The Loop about a twenty-something in the work force. In Reaper, he played a burnout whose parents sold his soul to the devil. He joined the cast of the remake of V and the show was swiftly canceled. Breaking In was a pretty intriguing sitcom starring Christian Slater about a team of security experts comprised of gifted thieves, but it too didn't last.
Miley Cyrus has gone native American after erecting a massive teepee on the grounds of her Studio City, Los Angeles home. Insiders claim the large tent, which stands on grass adjacent to the singer's swimming pool, was a 21st birthday gift to herself.
Miley's manor was at the centre of a burglary drama on Friday (22Nov13) as the pop star was making plans to celebrate her birthday - thieves broke into her home and made off with a haul of jewellery and personal items reportedly worth over $100,000 (£66,700)
The Wrecking Ball hitmaker turned 21 on Saturday (23Nov13) and celebrated with pals like Kelly Osbourne and Amber Rose on Sunday night (24Nov13) after her show-stopping performance at the American Music Awards.
Kelly Osbourne found herself unable to get home on Monday night (25Nov13) as a security corden around a fundraiser for President Barack Obama shut down the area surrounding her house. Obama held a gala on Monday night at the home of basketball icon Magic Johnson in Beverly Hills, California as part of the president's three-day tour of the West Coast, and security was tight.
Osbourne spent several hours trying to get around the police perimeter and took to her Twitter.com account to complain about the delays and worry about her house pets.
She wrote, "Been driving around for over an hour trying to get home because the 'president' is at a party on my street the police won't let me go home! I can't get back to my dogs and I'm starting to freak out! Why is Obama at a party on my street?"
The Fashion Police star even tried contacting the president directly to ask to be allowed through the corden, writing, "Dear Barack Obama please can I go home to feed my dogs & go to bed I promise I pose no threat to you. I just want to go home. I come from a county of real royals and they don't even pull this s**t for the Queen!"
She added, "I am 1 block away from my house and they won't even let me walk home! The president is at a party 2 f**king miles away! Even the mayor of Beverly Hills... I had no idea BH was big enough to have a mayor regardless they won't even let her go home!"
The residents were eventually allowed back into the area, and Osbourne concluded, "Yaaaay we are finally moving!!! If one good thing came of tonight it's that I got to meet all my neighbours!"
Miley Cyrus celebrated her 21st birthday with a booze-fuelled party, featuring strippers and saucy inflatable dolls. The singer/actress reached the milestone on Saturday (23Nov13), but postponed her celebrations until after her performance at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (24Nov13).
After coming off stage, Cyrus headed to Hollywood hang-out Beacher's Madhouse at the Roosevelt Hotel for a private party with friends including One Direction star Niall Horan, Kelly Osbourne, Tyler, The Creator and Wiz Khalifa.
Video and pictures from the party have emerged online, showing strippers entertaining the guests, while the venue was decked out with full-size posters of Cyrus and a number of inflatable dolls.
Guests were also handed cut-out masks of the star's face to wear during the evening, and an entertainer dressed as Dr. Seuss character The Lorax was also present at the bash.
"Celebrating @mileycyrus 21st birthday back stage at the #AMAS...! Thank God she is finally legal!" Kelly Osbourne toasts close pal Miley Cyrus' age milestone by sharing a bottle of Champagne and a cupcake with the birthday girl at the American Music Awards on Sunday (24Nov13). The singer/actress marked the big day on Saturday (23Nov13).
Kelly Osbourne ignored her doctor's warnings to stay on vocal rest for two weeks by hitting the red carpet for the American Music Awards on Sunday (24Nov13). The rock offspring showed no signs of illness as she mingled with pals like Miley Cyrus at the event, where she served as a presenter, three days after she revealed she had been diagnosed with nodules in her throat and advised to save her voice.
Ozzy Osbourne's daughter Kelly has been ordered not to speak for two weeks after falling ill with throat problems. The TV star took to Instagram.com on Thursday (21Nov13) to tell fans that she was diagnosed with pre vocal nodules and has been ordered to stop using her voice for 14 days.
Posting a graphic picture of her swollen throat on the site, she writes, "Warning this is disgusting! According to my DR I have pre vocal nodules and am on vocal rest for the next 2 weeks! That's worse than prison for me!"
It's the latest health setback for Osbourne, who was hospitalised earlier this year (13) following a seizure.
Kelly Osbourne has begun the painful process of having her tattoos removed. The reality TV star has previously confessed her regret over her 15 tattoos, revealing she went under the needle in an attempt to rebel against her parents.
On Tuesday (05Nov13), the Fashion Police star took the first step in the long, painful process to have the body art removed and she posted a video clip of her laser session on her Instagram.com account with the caption, "I did the crime, now I am doing the time. No pain no gain!"
In the video, the laser removal was concentrated on the colourful keyboard tattoo on her right arm. Osbourne has previously admitted she cannot remember why she got the tattoo.
