Singer La Toya Jackson almost botched her business manager's attempt to whisk her away to Hawaii for a marriage proposal last year (13), because she was not interested in taking a vacation. Michael Jackson's 58-year-old sister became engaged to Jeffre Phillips last August (13), but she only went public with the news in June (14).
Now the bride-to-be admits it took a little extra persuading from her father Joe Jackson, who had granted Phillips' request for her hand in marriage, for her to jet off on a two-day holiday with her beau.
She explains, "Before he proposed to me... he went to (Las) Vegas and he asked my father for my hand (in marriage). It was great.
"Right after that, I had dinner with my father and my father was desperately trying to tell me that Jeffre has a surprise in Hawaii, that, 'You need to go to Hawaii'. I didn't wanna go to Hawaii, I wanted to go to New York to do the play that I was getting ready to do (Off Broadway show Newsical the Musical). I had two days to rehearse... and Jeffre kept convincing me, 'Toya, you need two days off, you need downtime.'"
She finally agreed and she was blown away one night when Phillips transformed their luxury hotel suite into an all-white affair with flowers everywhere as they sat down for a lavish six-course dinner.
She recalls, "I go, 'Oh my God, what is this?' And he goes, 'We're having dinner, (a) special dinner.'"
She continues, "When it got to dessert... he gets on his knee and he asks, he says... 'Toy, will you marry me?' I got so nervous... He said, 'I didn't get you a ring.' I said, 'Don't even worry about that, that's not important' and then I get my dessert, I lift the dome (cover) up and there's the ring in the dome."
However, Jackson admits she has already suffered from cold feet over the nuptials.
She adds, "Your friends get so excited for you and they were just pushing me and rushing me (into wedding planning)... and I started getting really nervous, I started thinking, 'Wow, this is really real...' I got a little bit of cold feet."
The star was previously married to her manager Jack Gordon for seven years before they divorced in 1997. She alleged he had been abusive throughout the union.
Elvis Presley's ex-wife Priscilla has pleaded with the superstar's fans to "please calm down" after reports suggested two jets previously owned by the King were set to be removed from the grounds of his Graceland home. Estate officials at the Memphis, Tennessee mansion were recently said to have asked the current owners of the Lisa Marie and the Hound Dog II to find a new home for the planes as they were exercising their option to end a 30-year agreement to keep them at the Graceland tourist attraction.
The news sparked outrage among some devotees, who complained about the removal online, but now Priscilla Presley has spoken out about the situation, insisting they are still trying to work out a deal with owners at OKC Partnership in Memphis to keep the jets at Graceland.
In a post on her Facebook.com page, Priscilla writes, "please calm down, we're in the midst of negotiations."
Bosses at Elvis Presley Enterprises, who operate the venue, installed the planes at Graceland in the mid-1980s.
The Hound Dog II was previously owned by Hustler magazine boss Larry Flynt.
British rappers Lethal Bizzle and Tinchy Stryder have paid tribute to Ghanaian hip-hop star Castro, who is presumed dead following a weekend (05-06Jul14) jet ski accident. The musician, real name Theophilus Tagoe, had been on vacation with a group of pals, including his girlfriend Janet Bandu and Ghanaian soccer ace Asamoah Gyan, near the coastal town of Ada.
They hired jet skis from the local Aqua Safari Resort on Saturday (05Jul14), but tragedy struck after Bandu fell off the back of Castro's water vehicle. The rapper jumped into the water to rescue her, but neither of them resurfaced.
Police have yet to recover Castro or Bandu's bodies, but tributes for the musician have already started to roll in on Twitter.com.
Lethal Bizzle writes, "My favourite Ghanaian artist #RIPCastro", while Tinchy Styder adds, "My thoughts go out to Castro, his friends & family! Words can't even explain the shock I got when I heard the news! You're with the angels!"
R&B superstar Mary J. Blige was left grounded on Thursday (03Jul14) when a storm prevented her flight from taking off. The No More Drama hitmaker boarded a private jet to fly her to Alabama for a show at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater but was left waiting on the runway after bad weather hit New York.
The pilot was eventually given the green-light to take off, and Blige warned fans of the delay on Twitter.com.
She writes, "We had a slight delay. They grounded us due to a bad storm. We are back at it and about to take off now. #SeeYouSoon #alabama #Tuscaloosa #ShowTonight!!"
Veteran actress Joan Collins was left shaken after the plane she was flying in was caught in a terrifying storm. The Dynasty star was on a flight from Milan, Italy to London's Heathrow Airport on Tuesday (01Jul14) when the jet was struck by lightning.

Bond star Pierce Brosnan is keen to return to action movies and is eyeing a role in blockbuster film franchise The Expendables.
The Irish star has been largely absent from action films since vacating his role as 007 in 2002, but he has been approached by Expendables producer Avi Lerner about joining the franchise's star-packed cast for a future installment.
Brosnan is eager to unite with Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Jet Li in the series, telling ComingSoon.net, "I said to Avi Lerner, 'If it works out and you have a good script, Avi, you know where to find me if you still want me.' It's as simple as that really. I had a grand time in his company. Sylvester Stallone is the one that's given us these wonderful platforms for actors who have and had careers to go play and have fun and to entertain. To bring a bunch of guys together who saved the world, fought the bad guys, and put them all on the same stage, that's crazy good."
"It's just about entertainment. Avi is somebody I've heard about and his movies always have big brash entertainment value to them. You can really change the world and that's great, but The Expendables? Yeah, I'd love to do The Expendables. It's just a kick in the pants."
Brosnan also defends the casting of sitcom icon Kelsey Grammer in The Expendables 3, which is set for release in August (14), adding, "He's a fantastic actor, Kelsey Grammer. You don't have that kind of career without having a talent, without having something to say and to give to an audience."
Supermodel Bar Refaeli had to endure everyone's worst travel nightmare on Friday (27Jun14) when a driver took her to the wrong airport. The pretty Israeli stunner, who briefly dated Leonardo DiCaprio, missed her flight to a modelling assignment when she found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Alerting her 1.3 million Twitter.com followers to her dilemma, she wrote, "Jet set life is stressful, it gets more stressful when ur (your) driver supposed to take u to the airport & confusing with a different airport (sic)!"
She added, "#missedmyflight."
Nigerian pop star Adokiye Kyrian has issued a bizarre appeal to Islamic extremists at militant group Boko Haram, offering up her own virginity in exchange for the release of the schoolgirls they kidnapped in April (14). The singer, 23, is angry the 276 youngsters the terrorists snatched from a Nigerian boarding school two months ago have still to be located, and she has now encouraged Boko Haram leaders to take her captive and do what they will to her instead.
In an interview with Vanguardngr.com, she says, "This is 11pm in the night and do you know what I am thinking about? Those little girls, where they are and what could be happening to them. It is just unfair. They are too young. I wish I could offer myself in exchange...
"They are between 12 and 15-year-old girls for Christ's sake. I am older and more experienced. Even if 10 to 12 men have to take me (rape her) every night, I don't care. Just release these girls and let them go back to their parents."
Kyrian recently revealed she was still a virgin, joking, "Any man that buys my mum the private jet I had promised her, wins my heart."
Kyrian isn't the first celebrity to draw attention to the plight of the kidnapped girls - stars including Jada Pinkett Smith, Salma Hayek, Sylvester Stallone, Alicia Keys, Alyssa Milano, Queen Latifah and Minnie Driver all threw their support behind the #BringBackOurGirls Twitter.com campaign upon its launch in May (14).
L'Wren Scott's brother has thrown his support behind the tragic fashion designer's longtime lover Sir Mick Jagger in a bid to silence "ridiculous" gossip about the singer's private life. The designer committed suicide at her home in New York City in March (14) while the Rolling Stones star was on tour in Australia, prompting the singer to jet back to the U.S. and put the band's trek on hold.
Jagger was recently photographed on a hotel balcony in Switzerland with 27-year-old American ballet dancer Melanie Hamrick, sparking suggestions he has moved on following the death of his partner of 13 years.
Scott's brother Randy Bambrough has now moved to dismiss speculation about Jagger's personal life, calling the gossip "completely ridiculous" and adding to Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper, "I continue to have a very warm relationship with Mick and have never questioned his love for L'Wren and how important she was in his life."
Bambrough's comments follow remarks by Scott's sister Jan Shane, who publicly criticised Jagger, saying, "These pictures (of him in Switzerland) make me wonder what Mick is really thinking and feeling. His daughter says that he is still heartbroken and devastated about losing my sister, and then you see these these photos - he will never change."
The new trailer for The Expendables 3 shows off an unsurprising abundance of explosions, gunfire, and sexagenarians saying things like "Lock and load." A bit more surprising in its ubiquity, however, is the action hero's old friend the helicopter. Yes, any film bording the lethal dose of adrenaline is bound to feature a chopper or two, but the two-and-a-half minute preview for Sylvester Stallone's upcoming threequel shows off an irrational number whirlybirds. And yeah, those are the only slang words for "helicopter" I know, so we're going to have to get creative now.
We catch glimpse the first of many propellerinos swooping down over an enemy train to rescue the apparently nonexpendable Wesley Snipes from incarceration. After rendering the entire locomotive to ruins (hopefully those were Nazis or something and not, you know, just military men doing their job apprehending criminals), we move onto a slew of other hummingbots prime for adventure: one drops off a maniacal Mel Gibson. One launches explosive at the side of a dock. One hovers over the speeding car of Natalie Burn. And one hovers just out of reach of what we can only assume is a ketamine-engendered Sylvester Stallone. And that's not even counting the jets (of both the plane and Li variety) sprinkled throughout the trailer.
If the trailer offers up this many circle-spin-bumble-droids (too creative?), we can only imagine what the 103-minute runtime has in store.
