British punk stars The Stranglers feared they were targeted by a sinister secret organisation as they worked on an alien-themed album while experimenting with drugs. The Golden Brown hitmakers' fifth record, The Gospel According to The Meninblack, deals with conspiracy theories and extraterrestrial encounters and was made while the bandmembers spent a year taking heroin for "artistic" reasons.
Drummer Jet Black has now revealed the musicians became increasingly paranoid as they were plagued by accidents and disasters during the making of the record.
He tells Britain's The Guardian newspaper, "We were making an album called The Meninblack, which was based on this phenomenon back then known only to a small coterie of UFO obsessives - that people who saw UFOs were visited by strange people wearing black to shut them up. Anyway, as soon as we started making the album, studios blew up, tour buses broke down and gigs became riots. People working for us dropped dead. We were convinced something occult was going on."
Crooner Michael Buble made a dedicated fan's wish come true by vowing to fly her to one of his upcoming concerts. Scottish teacher Ishbel Munro was in the crowd at Buble's concert in Glasgow, Scotland last week (ends09Mar13) when she caught the star's eye with her banner, which revealed she had been to 25 of his gigs.
The singer plucked Munro from the audience and dedicated Frank Sinatra classic That's Life to her, before promising to pay for her to attend one of his upcoming shows abroad.
She tells Britain's Daily Record newspaper, "I was speechless. I'm a huge Michael Buble fan, so it was just amazing. I feel blessed. Michael is so charismatic but so down-to-earth. And his voice is just amazing.
"He thanked me for spending my money on going to his shows. He's so genuine. I can't wait for the next show. I still can't believe he is doing this for me. I am the luckiest girl in the world - and then some."
Jet Li's former stunt double Ju Kun has been identified among the passengers who were onboard a Malaysia Airlines plane that went missing over the weekend (08-09Mar14). Pilots of a flight en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, China lost contact with airline authorities on Saturday (08Mar14), prompting fears of a crash.
Kun was among the 227 passengers onboard.
He was flying home from Pinewood Studios in Malaysia, and gearing up to begin production on Netflix series Marco Polo in the next few weeks.
Marco Polo creator John Fusco tells Deadline.com, "All of us on location in Malaysia are devastated as we go through this agonising wait. Ju Kun is an integral and beloved member of our Marco Polo family, and on behalf of Harvey Weinstein and Netflix, we are all profoundly shocked and saddened.
"Right now are are rallying around his wife, Li Ping as she awaits answers in Kuala Lumpur. Our hearts and prayers are also with all of the other missing passengers and their families."
Jun previously worked on films Fearless, The Expendables, The Grandmaster and The Forbidden Kingdom.
A search effort is currently underway, but no wreckage had been found as WENN went to press. Reports suggest the plane may have attempted to return to Malaysia.
Pop singer-turned-TV presenter Dannii Minogue has a bizarre new hobby - she runs a worm farm. The star returned to her native Melbourne, Australia last year (13) but she still travels to the U.K. frequently because of work commitments and to stay in touch with her elder sister Kylie, who lives in London.
Her jet-set lifestyle makes it difficult for her to own any pets but the animal-loving brunette was so desperate for some creature company she has started a worm farm Down Under.
Minogue tells the U.K.'s Hello! magazine, "I have a worm farm... They're the only pets I can look after travelling between Melbourne and London so I'm getting into gardening as well."
A man convicted of causing the death of Usher's former stepson has been ordered to serve four years behind bars. Jeffrey Hubbard was accused of losing control of the jet ski which collided with and killed 11-year-old Kile Glover during a family vacation at Lake Lanier in Georgia on 6 July, 2012.
He was found guilty on charges of homicide with a vessel, reckless operation of a vessel, unlawful operation of a personal watercraft, boat traffic violation, and serious injury by vessel following a jury trial in Georgia last month (Feb14), and he was handed the prison term during sentencing on Wednesday (05Mar14).
Young Kile, whose mother is Usher's ex-wife Tameka Raymond, was left brain dead following the tragic accident and died on 21 July, 2012.
Rocker Midge Ure had a "close escape" when he ruled out releasing an Ultravox album with a plain black cover as the idea was mercilessly parodied in spoof music documentary This Is Spinal Tap just weeks later. The Vienna hitmakers were gearing up to release their new album Lament in 1984 and they were toying with the idea of putting out the disc accompanied by a pictureless, jet-black sleeve.
They eventually decided against the move and made sure there was an image on the cover, and frontman Ure was relieved weeks later when he saw the comedy movie upon its release and watched in horror as the producers mocked a rock band for releasing an all-black album.
Ure tells British magazine Event, "When Ultravox made Lament, we talked about having the entire sleeve black. My argument was, it's minimal advertising, and people would say, 'Wow, what's this?' Then Spinal Tap did Smell The Glove - none more black - and it was rubbish. A close escape."
The Hunger Games star Sam Claflin has yet to jet off for his honeymoon nearly eight months after marrying his actress partner in secret last year (13). The British actor wed Laura Haddock in a low-key ceremony last July (13), but the couple has been too busy to book themselves a traditional post-wedding vacation.
Claflin tells Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper, "It's hard, we haven't had a chance to organise one yet. It's not that being busy with work is a bad thing, but finding time to spend together is valuable."
The man who was riding the jet ski which collided with and killed Usher's former stepson in 2012 has been convicted on a string of charges, including homicide by vessel. Kile Glover, whose mother is Usher's ex-wife Tameka Raymond, was sitting on an inflatable raft on Lake Lanier in Georgia on 6 July, 2012 when Jeffrey Hubbard lost control of the waterborne craft and collided with the 11 year old.
The child, who was vacationing with his dad Ryan Glover, was left brain dead and never regained consciousness. He died on 21 July, 2012.
Hubbard was subsequently charged with homicide with a vessel, reckless operation of a vessel, unlawful operation of a personal watercraft, boat traffic violation, and serious injury by vessel.
He pleaded not guilty and the case went to jury trial last week (10Feb14).
Closing arguments were delivered in Hall County Superior Court on Thursday morning (20Feb14) and he was convicted on all five counts just hours later.
Hubbard was taken into custody ahead of sentencing on 5 March (14).
Simon Cowell's newborn son is already preparing to become a jet-setter after the music and reality TV mogul obtained his baby's first passport at just five days old. The X Factor creator and judge and his girlfriend Lauren Silverman welcomed their first child together, son Eric, on Friday (14Feb14) and on Wednesday (19Feb14), the happy couple headed to Manhattan Family Court in New York, where a judge signed an order of filiation, formally acknowledging Cowell as the tot's father in the event of custody or visitation issues.
According to TMZ.com, the new parents also filed papers for Eric's first travel documents and he was subsequently cleared for take-off.
However, the child is unlikely to be boarding a plane anytime soon - medics recommend waiting until babies are at least four weeks old to fly.
But Cowell won't be able to wait around - he is due back in his native U.K. to continue filming for U.K. reality show Britain's Got Talent, on which he is a judge, after jetting across the Atlantic on Friday as his partner went into labour.
Jenni Rivera's widower has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the owners of the jet which crashed and killed the singer in 2012. The 43-year-old pop star died, along with six others, when the private plane they were travelling in went down in Mexico, and now her estranged husband has launched a legal battle with the Learjet's owners.
Former Los Angeles Dodgers baseball player Esteban Loaiza filed a wrongful death lawsuit at Los Angeles Superior Court, according to Billboard.com.
Rivera split from the former sports star before her death and filed for divorce just two months before the crash.
The lawsuit takes aim at the firm which owned the plane, Starwood Management, and its parent company, Rodatz Financial Group, and seeks unspecified damages.
