The new fall pilots haven't even premiered yet, but already the networks are looking forward to their next big task: finding the right pilots and scripts to order for the 2013-2014 season. Development season is well underway and has been for the past few weeks — although this season is marked by a declaration from some networks (namely ABC and NBC) that the typically order-happy suits would not be as quick to bulk up their pilot orders this year. In other words, less is more.
Most of the majors have already made their first-round choices for specific projects, and the trends that have emerged seem to be all about big-name attachments (e.g. Vince Vaughn, Jodie Foster, Ryan Reynolds), period dramas (e.g. Aztec empire, Cold War America, 1890s Europe), international transplants (from Israel, England and Scandinavia) and — in an interestingly-revived yet well-worn trend — book adaptations (including Dracula and two Sleepy Hollow reboots).
Here's what ABC, CBS, The CW, FOX, NBC and more have coming down the '13-'14 pipeline so far:
— Dumb F*ck: Single-camera comedy about an average Joe and his brilliant wife who move in with her intelligent yet emotionally stunted family of geniuses; written by Hank Nelken (Saving Silverman), executive produced by Vin Di Bona, Bruce Gersh, Susan Levison and Shaleen Desai.
— Burns & Cooley: Medical procedural about two New York neurosurgeons who compete as they strive to be the top in all aspects of their lives; written by Meredith Philpott (Awkward), exec produced by Matt Gross (Body Of Proof).
— Founding Fathers: Drama about a war veteran whose Texas hometown is in the hands of a militia group led by his older brother; written by Rich D'Ovidio (Thir13en Ghosts), produced by Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Dan McDermott.
— Untitled McG Project: Retelling of Romeo and Juliet, revolving around two rival families fighting for control over Venice, California; written by Byron Balasco (Detroit 1-8-7), produced by McG (The OC, Supernatural, Nikita).
— Untitled Kurtzman/Orci Project: Drama about a mysterious game; written by Noah Hawley (The Unusuals), produced by Heather Kadin, Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci.
— Dracula: 1890s-set period piece about the iconic vampire; written by Cole Haddon, produced by Tony Krantz and Colin Callender; starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors).
— The Blacklist: Drama about an international criminal who surrenders himself and helps the government hunt down his former cohorts; written by Jon Bokenkamp, exec produced by John Davis, John Fox and John Eisendrath.
— Hench: Based on the comic about a man who becomes a temp for super villains; written by Alexandra Cunningham (Desperate Housewives), exec produced by Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey (Prime Suspect).
— Cleopatra: Period drama about the Egyptian queen Cleopatra; written by Michael Seitzman (Americana), exec produced by Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Dan McDermott.
— Pariah: Drama inspired by Freakonomics about a rogue academic who uses economic theory to police San Diego; written by Kevin Fox (The Negotiator), exec produced by Kelsey Grammer, Stella Stolper and Brian Sher.

Both movies will compete for the coveted Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture prize, alongside Black Swan, The Kids Are All Right and Facebook-inspired film The Social Network.
The King's Speech star Colin Firth is among nominees in the best actor category, which also saw nods to Jeff Bridges (True Grit),
Robert Duvall (Get Low), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) and James Franco (127 Hours), while The Fighter star Mark Wahlberg missed out on a mention.
Trailing with three nominations each are The Kids Are All Right and Black Swan, which earned respective stars Annette Bening and Natalie Portman mentions in the best actress category, next to Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) and Hilary Swank (Conviction).
The nominations were announced on Thursday morning (16Dec10) by guest presenters Rosario Dawson and Angie Harmon and the prizegiving ceremony will take place on 30 January (11).

WHAT IT’S ABOUT?
After witnessing a sociopathic older bully named Mick beat up two high-school jocks straight-arrow Charlie secretly tells the cops what happened but then rescinds his testimony thinking Mick never knew. Three years later the two are reunited when Mick unexpectedly turns up in Charlie’s college dorm and starts dangerously weaving himself back into Charlie’s life.
WHO’S IN IT?
As Charlie Jesse Eisenberg (The Squid and the Whale the upcoming Adventureland) gets the well-intentioned if weak-kneed nature of a kid who is alternately concerned confused and intimidated by a charismatic but creepy guy he can’t seem to shake. The real revelation is John Ritter’s son Jason Ritter playing a classic bully personality but giving it an intriguing cutting edge. His Mick is a guy who seems to be a combination of a potentially dynamic individual and a walking time bomb a dude who can’t control himself but tries to manipulate others. The object of Charlie’s desire and Mick’s sudden attention is also well-played by Eva Amurri (daughter of Susan Sarandon).
A rare college story that isn’t about boobs and beer parties The Education of Charlie Banks tries hard to be a character-driven drama about the divergent social paths of young people who are clearly the products of the environment in which they grew up.
Director/rock star Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit) makes an uneven directorial debut and seems to fall victim to the inconsistencies in the sketchy screenplay by Peter Elkoff. Exactly what point are they trying to make here? Never rat on a bully or he’ll come back to haunt you? Everyone’s had experience with this kind of person but the frequent lack of credibility in the treatment probably won’t have many in the audience relating.
A two-year wait for distribution after its 2007 Tribeca Film Festival debut doesn’t bode well for a nicely performed but ultimately indifferent independently produced movie.
Painfully estranged from his daughter old-school boxing trainer Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood) hasn't let anyone get too close to him in a very long time. Even his best friend and former trainee Scrap (Morgan Freeman) who manages Frankie's rundown boxing gym has a tough time getting through. Everything changes however when Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) walks into the gym. A spitfire looking for someone to believe in her Maggie also has a painful past. But with unshakable willpower along with some tremendous raw talent Maggie has found that her love for boxing could be her ticket to a happy life--and she wants Frankie to turn her into a champion. Naturally he doesn't want to have anything to do with her and doesn't want to take that risk especially with a girl.Yet Frankie is soon won over by the young boxer's dogged resolve to be the best. The road to glory isn't easily paved for these two stubborn mules but Maggie and Frankie rediscover a sense of family they both thought they'd lost long ago. Theirs is a bond that will carry them through one of the hardest journeys either one of them will ever take. Oh yeah you're going to need a wad of tissues for this one.
Swank once again sheds her girlishness to tackle the roughhouse world of female boxing and she delivers another Oscar-caliber performance as Maggie. Not only does the actress embody the physicality of such a role--achieved after months of hard training--she also captures the spirit of a woman who defies the odds by breaking away from her dirt-poor trailer-trash upbringing to become a champion. Some may liken the plain no-nonsense Maggie to Swank's Oscar-winning role as the girl-turned-boy Brandon in Boys Don't Cry but Swank has matured in her acting abilities giving Maggie a very definite feminine edge. Still Swank might consider a nice romantic comedy for her next project. As for the men of Baby Eastwood and Freeman have never been more on top of their game. Frankie is tailored-made for Eastwood who plays a man tortured by his past and reluctant to let anyone in. It's a persona he has adopted many times but as the boxing trainer the craggy face gravel-voiced actor-director truly gives one of the better performances of his career. The same goes for Freeman as the soft-spoken but oh-so-wise Scrap. And watching the two Unforgiven veterans bicker and banter in Baby is like watching an old married couple.
Like a fine wine Clint Eastwood's movies just keep getting better and better the older the director gets. Following last year's intense Mystic River which some saw as a bit heavy handed Eastwood seems to have gone back to a quieter simpler more personal tone with Million Dollar Baby. The film starts out along the lines of such great boxing films as Raging Bull and the recent Girlfight as it highlights the competitive world of female boxing. It's in your face and gritty showing the punches the blood and the pain in glorious Technicolor. But just as it starts to turn into Rocky-style sap when Maggie rises to the top against all the odds the film subtly shifts into a love story about two people hurt by their pasts only to find each other and decide to hold on in a deeply familial way. Then just when you think how sweet that all is Baby throws you for an even bigger albeit darker loop. Eastwood expertly and gently guides you through the film's wondrous maze of revelations. Baby could very well creep in as a surprise Oscar contender.
