Cher has joined a campaign to free the world's "saddest creature" from a zoo in Argentina. The pop superstar was horrified by online images of lonely polar bear Arturo, showing signs of depression following the death of his partner, and took to Twitter in a bid to urge Argentine president, Cristina Fernandez, to order zoo bosses in Mendoza to let him live out his days at a sanctuary in Canada.
She wrote, "Don't cry for him, Argentina? No tears of Mrs. Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner for tortured polar bear Arturo. Your hands are stained with his blood when he dies."
Activists have been campaigning for the 28-year-old bear's move since late 2013, when a heatwave endangered the life of the only polar bear in Argentina.
The director of the zoo insists Arturo will not be moved despite a Change.org petition signed by 500,000 people, encouraging him to change his mind.
British rapper Wiley has lashed out at immigration officials in Canada after he was deported from the country before a show in Toronto on Wednesday (02Apr14). The Heatwave hitmaker, 35, was en route to the city to perform at The Hoxton venue when he was stopped by Canadian border authorities amid concerns of a criminal history in the U.S.
Wiley told customs officials he had never run into legal trouble in America, but it wasn't enough to get him into the country.
In a series of posts on Twitter.com on Wednesday night, he wrote, "Immigration have got me and are sending me back to london .....Sad story. TELLING ME I HAVE A CRIMINAL RECORD IN AMERICA .......WHAT ARE THE (they) SAYING ...I HAVE NEVER BEEN ARRESTED IN AMERICA B4 (before). I am not even angry this is the 3rd time in life i have been denied from a place ...for nothing cos i have never been to jail in my life (sic)."
But Wiley's troubles only got worse after the London-based star learned he was being put on a plane to Glasgow, Scotland instead of one to the British capital.
He later tweeted, "OMG (oh my god) IMMIGRATION ARE SENDING ME BACK TO SCOTLAND WTF (what the f**k) ......CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS... GLASGOW......WTF ...HE SAID I CAN CAN FIND MY WAY TO ENGLAND FROM GLASGOW....WHAT A P**CK...
"Anyway en route to scotland F**KIN ELL .......trek (sic)".
The deportation is the latest drama in Wiley's life - he recently announced he was scrapping his new album, Snakes And Ladders, because he was unimpressed by his own work.
Actress Shirley Maclaine got costume designers on the set of Downton Abbey to incorporate a hand fan into her outfit so she could keep cool during a scorching summer heatwave. The Oscar winner plays aristocratic Martha Levinson in the hit period drama, but she was left struggling to stay cool when a special festive episode of the show was shot in July (13).
The U.K. was basking in a record-breaking run of hot weather at the time, and MacLaine was so desperate to keep her body temperature down, producers allowed her to cling on to a hand fan as part of Levinson's costume.
She tells British newspaper The Sun, "How about those costumes in 91 degrees (Fahrenheit)? That was no fun. I had a fan as my constant companion. We ended up adding it to Martha's costume because I couldn't do without it."
Scottish actor John Hannah has helped his homeland celebrate the 100th anniversary of Edinburgh Zoo by launching a newly renovated animal enclosure. The Sliding Doors star is taking part in the commemorative events on Monday (22Jul13) to mark 100 years since the facility opened its gates to the public.
He has already narrated Animal Magic, a new BBC documentary on the tourist attraction's history, and has now got up-close-and-personal with the zoo's furry residents by launching a newly refurbished koala enclosure.
The renovated Koala Territory is home to the only koalas in the U.K. Hannah also cooled off from the British summer heatwave by joining a colony of penguins in their own enclosure.
British rapper Wiley cut short his set at a U.K. music festival at the weekend (20-21Jul13) after he was booed by revellers over previous comments he made about the event. The Heatwave hitmaker took to the stage at the Cockrock festival in Cumbria, England on Saturday, but abandoned his performance after just 15 minutes when the crowd began to jeer.
The negative response to the hip-hop star came after he told fans on Twitter.com that he didn't want to headline the festival, writing, "Just the name of that festival in Cumbria makes me not wanna go..."
After the performance he boasted about how much money he made during the short set, adding, "I drove into Cumbria picked up 15 k (£15,000) underneath the noses of a few haters not everyone was... just a few... Fear no area or no human."
However the festival's director Marie Whitehead is unsure whether the rapper will see his pay cheque as he didn't perform for the contracted 45 minutes.
She says, "We are dealing with 250 contracts for the event, so I'm not sure what the position is but we will be getting legal advice on what happened. It is very disappointing as it would appear he did not fulfil his contract and was supposed to play for 45 minutes.
"I was watching and the crowd was enjoying the music but then he launched into a speech and tried to explain his Twitter posts.
"He said it wasn't to do with Cumbria and that he had had a fall out with his manager and hadn't wanted to do all the travelling. There was a little bit of booing so he just walked off saying 'goodnight'."
Last month (Jun13), Wiley walked out of Britain's Glastonbury festival the day before he was due to perform after complaining about the weather and his fee.
"Could you please put a shallow saucer of water in your garden as hedgehogs are dying from dehydration? Enjoy the sunshine." British comedian Ricky Gervais urges his fans to take care of the spiny mammals as the U.K. enjoys a rare heatwave.
The Killers triumphed at Scotland's T in the Park festival on Sunday night (14Jul13), after winning a poll to find the act revellers most wanted to see. Organisers asked festivalgoers a year ago to name the group or performer they'd most like to see close out the 2013 event, and the Las Vegas-based rockers, who made their debut at the nation's biggest musical weekend in 2004, came out on top.
Brandon Flowers and his bandmates hit the stage almost 20 minutes late but thrilled the fans with a hits set that began with Somebody Told Me.
The Killers wrapped up a day of glorious sunshine that featured performances from Ocean Colour Scene, David Guetta and Rita Ora.
The three-day event was marred by a rare heatwave that led to hundreds of revellers seeking refuge in on-site medical tents with hydration and sunstroke emergencies.
Excessive heat has marred the annual T in the Park festival in Scotland for some revellers, with medical staff onsite treating almost 900 people for mainly sun-related issues. While arrests are down to 57 since the event opened on Thursday (11Jul13), medical needs have spiralled as music fans ignored warnings to drink plenty of water and cover themselves with lotion.
Medical experts have revealed most of the issues they have dealt with over the weekend have been connected to dehydration and sunburn.
T in the Park concludes on Sunday night (14Jul13) with headline performances from The Killers and Frank Ocean.
Rihanna topped the bill at the festival on Saturday night (13Jul13) after appearing onstage 15 minutes late. Alt-J, Ke$ha and Liam Gallagher's Beady Eye also performed.
British rapper Wiley has attempted to explain his reasons for backing out of a scheduled appearance at Glastonbury Festival, insisting he quit the gig over a previous disagreement with event bosses. The Heatwave hitmaker arrived at the Worthy Farm site in Somerset, England the day before his planned performance last month (29Jun13), but subsequently took to Twitter.com to complain about the weather and his fee.
In a series of posts he ranted, "Soon as I land... Rain ffs (for f**k's sake)... Glastonbury ain't paying me enough to leave my comfort zone... tight b**tards (sic)."
He later implored Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis to take him off the bill before walking out.
The rapper has now attempted to explain away his surprise exit, insisting he has issues with the way Glastonbury is run and wants to help lesser-known festivals instead.
He tells the Global Gathering Radio Show, "I turned round to Glastonbury and said no because of something (event bosses have) done to me previously. Not that we should be playing tit for tat... but... (I am at) a place where I can say 'You know what I'm not going to do Glastonbury, let me help the other festivals rise up'...
"When Glastonbury called I said no. I've told Glastonbury I respect the man (Michael Eavis), I respect the amount of money they earn, I respect they give it to charity... but my point is this - Glastonbury is meant to be the biggest festival in the world and Glastonbury charge £220 a ticket - and there's loads of elements in that place about just making lots of money instead of being the best festival in the world. I just wanted the world to know that - I don't want to upset Glastonbury."
British rapper Wiley has pulled out of plans to perform at the U.K.'s legendary Glastonbury festival after complaining about the weather conditions and the low pay. The Heatwave hitmaker arrived at Worthy Farm in Somerset, England on Friday morning (28Jun13) ahead of his DJ set on Saturday (29Jun13), but he quickly made it clear he was not happy to be there.
In a series of Twitter.com posts, he wrote, "Soon as I land ...Rain ffs (for f**k's sake)... Glastonbury ain't paying me enough to leave my comfort zone... tight b**tards (sic)".
He then reached out to organisers at the official Glastonbury Twitter page and asked to be removed from the bill, pleading, "Please cancel me I do not want to play for you ever again... please cancel me without sueing I would like that... Tell michael eavis (festival founder) I dont wanna play please maybe he has the power to throw me off the line up... (sic)".
After failing to receive a reply, Wiley decided to take matters into his own hands and hopped into a car to leave the Glastonbury grounds and head to London's Heathrow Airport.
Updating fans online, he wrote, "Ya know what... en route to heathrow realtalk...lol (laugh out loud).... Idc (I don't care). Make sure you go see the Rolling Stones tho...
"I don't have to play there... all this moaning means nothing to neither me or god... Tbf (to be fair) my manager and team could of prevented this but I don't blame them I'm just glad I ain't at glasto... Amen (sic)."
Event organisers have yet to comment on Wiley's departure; he had been due to play an hour-long DJ set in the Sonic tent on Saturday afternoon.
The 2013 Glastonbury festival officially kicked off on Friday with performances from Alt-J, Haim, Jake Bugg, Rita Ora, The Vaccines and the Arctic Monkeys.
The Rolling Stones and Mumford & Sons will headline the main stage on Saturday and Sunday (30Jun13), respectively.
