The 61 year old was propelled to stardom after her turn in 1978 movie Grease and graced the covers of magazines worldwide.
Newton-John refused to take her pin-up status seriously at the time, and claims the decision kept her grounded.
But the actress feels sorry for Spears, who found fame as a teenager in the late 1990s - because the amount of press coverage sexy stars receive nowadays is unprecedented.
She tells Britain's Attitude magazine, "The poor girl. She has lived in a time where the paparazzi reign and we didn't have that problem at all. We'd have occasional intrusion, you know I had a few incidents, but it was nothing like it is now.
"I don't think you realise it (early fame) until you look back because it doesn't really feel like reality in the time. I never really took it too seriously, which is healthy."

The Grease star turned 61 on 26 September (09) and partner John Easterling treated her to a kayak as a present - so the couple took it on an adventure break to mark Newton-John's big day.
She says, "My husband bought me a kayak, so we went kayaking on my birthday. It was amazing, I had a most beautiful birthday. We were with nature - swimming, kayaking and drinking vodka in the water."
"I can still wear them. But they're locked away in a cupboard. I only bring them out for special occasions - my husband loves them!" OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN can still squeeze into the tight costumes she wore in GREASE.
The music mogul turns 50 on Wednesday (07Oct09) but he got the party started early on Saturday (03Oct09), inviting 400 guests to the event at billionaire Sir Philip Green's mansion in Hertfordshire, England.
And the birthday boy spared no expense in entertaining family, friends and A-list celebrities such as Sir Elton John and Kevin Spacey - he is said to have paid a whopping $1.5 million (£1 million) for the party, including $75,000 (£50,000) for a fleet of limousines to shuttle guests to the venue.
He also treated revellers to vintage champagne and performances by boyband Westlife as well as The X Factor winners Lewis and Alexandra Burke, and a rendition of Happy Birthday from supermodel Kate Moss.
Giant images of Cowell were plastered all around the party, while waiters wore masks bearing his likeness. Pre-recorded birthday wishes from David and Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Aniston were played on giant screens.
Cowell's guest list included his American Idol colleagues Ryan Seacrest and Randy Jackson, as well as Naomi Campbell, Sharon Osbourne, Olivia Newton-John, Dannii Minogue and his 82-year-old mum Julie.
Speaking about the party's hefty price tag, the birthday boy said, "I always pick up my own tab whether it’s for four people or 400."

The actress was just 16 years old when she flew to Australia to film her debut movie, 1991's Flirting, and began a turbulent six-year romance with the director, who was then 39.
After recently working with schoolgirls at Oprah Winfrey's Leadership Academy in South Africa, Newton was reminded of how young she was when she started her love affair with Duigan.
And the Crash star still wonders how the filmmaker could have dated someone so "vulnerable".
She says, "I was 16. I didn't tell my parents about it (the relationship) but really young people who are vulnerable have to be looked out for. I've just been out to South Africa to Oprah's Leadership Academy. It educates girls from impoverished backgrounds and I was taking part in an arts week.
"I looked at the 16-year-old girls there. How can it possibly be right to start a serious relationship with someone that age when you are so much older? I've been through a lot of therapy so I sort of know why people do things now.".
Patrick McDermott, presumed dead after disappearing on a 2005 fishing trip, is said to have faxed a message to U.S. private detectives asking to live his life in peace in Mexico.
The fax, obtained by Britain's Daily Mail, reads, "Pat has asked that I portray to you his innocence. Pat has committed no crime. Pat simply wishes to be left alone. Let him live his life in peace and harmony. He is safe and has started anew again in a new place both physically and mentally. Stop this search immediately.
Lead investigator Philip Klein alleges he and his team have also received three phone calls from McDermott's representatives in the past six months, which followed 16 sightings of the cameraman in Mexico in recent years.
Klein believes McDermott is now working as a deckhand in fishing town Sayulita amid speculation he had staged his own death to be free of child support debts to ex-wife Yvette Nipar.
The Grease star was left heartbroken after McDermott vanished off the California coast, but has since found love with tycoon John Easterling, who she married in Peru last summer (08).
