Rapper Nelly led a star-studded protest against the killing of Missouri teenager Michael Brown during a celebrity football game in California on Saturday (16Aug14).
The star attended the charity flag football event organised by Chris Brown and Quincy Combs, stepson of rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs, and he led the guests in a demonstration against the killing of the unarmed teenager in Ferguson, Missouri earlier this month (Aug14).
The Dilemma hitmaker asked attendees at the Jack Kemp Stadium in Glendale to raise their hands in the same gesture used by protesters, which has come to be known as 'Hands Up Don't Shoot'.
Nelly, who grew up in Missouri, appealed for the crowd's support, saying, "If I could get everybody to rise and just raise their hands in support for everything that's going on back home in my city right now at this minute. If anybody can sympathise with what my city is going through, it's this city of L.A. right now. On so many levels."
Other celebrities at the match included The Game, Trey Songz, Omarion, Bow Wow, Wale, Lil Mama and Jermaine Dupri. The death of Michael Brown, who was a suspect in a robbery, sparked a series of heated protests in the state, while the use of tear gas and rubber bullets by riot police prompted widespread condemnation.
R&B singer Omarion has become a father for the first time. The Ice Box star's longtime girlfriend Apryl Jones has given birth to baby boy, called Megaa, and the proud parents introduced fans to their newborn via Instagram.com on Thursday (07Aug14).
The new dad, real name Omari Ishmael Grandberry, shared a snap of himself holding the tot and in the accompanying caption, he wrote, "World. Allow me to introduce. MEGAA OMARI GRANDBERRY. He is 7 pounds. 4oz & 20 inches long. My son I've been waiting on you (sic). God is the realist (sic)!! I witnessed a miracle".
He also uploaded a cute picture of the baby sleeping on his chest and lavished praise on Jones for choosing a natural, home birth.
He added, "My soul mate @aprylsjones is so strong! Not only did she have a un medicated (sic) birth (no drugs) she did it at home. Naturally. Just like my mom had me. I love you. thank you for having my legacy. I'll forever belong to you & you will forever be tied to me."
R&B star Chris Brown called on his celebrity friends to take part in a friendly kickball match to support his charity on Saturday (19Jul14). The Kiss Kiss hitmaker gathered his pals at the Glendale Sports Complex in California to raise funds for his Symphonic Love Foundation, which supports arts programs for youngsters.
Brown served as the captain of an all-star team which included Jamie Foxx, Paris Hilton, Christina Milian, Omarion, Kendall and Kylie Jenner and DJ Khaled, and they went up against a team led by Sean 'Diddy' Combs' stepson Quincy, who saw over a crew including The Game, Ne-Yo, Keke Palmer and Amber Rose.
Brown, who was released from jail last month (Jun14) following a three-month stint behind bars, led his team to victory and even treated the fans in attendance to a performance of his new single, Loyal.
R&B star Omarion has been arrested for failing to appear in court to contest a traffic ticket. The former B2K star's car was pulled over for running through a stop sign in the San Fernando Valley, California on Friday morning (18Jul14) and when an officer checked his licence, he discovered there was a warrant out for his arrest.
The singer was arrested and taken to a nearby police station for booking.
Omarion, real name Omari Ishmael Grandberry, was released later that day after posting nearly $30,000 (£17,647) bail.
Rapper Rick Ross has been accused of dodging process servers' attempts to slap him with court papers for the past six months after he allegedly bailed on plans to perform in London in 2012. The heavyweight hip-hop star was named in papers alongside his collaborators Meek Mill, Wale and Omarion amid accusations they pulled out of a gig at the city's Wembley Arena after promoters at Executive Decision gave them a large advance of their performance fees and covered other costs, amounting to $93,281.26 (£58,300).
Company boss Christian Ezechie filed his complaint in New York federal court in October (13), but now claims that "despite numerous and diligent attempts" he has been "unable to locate the defendants".
Ezechie reveals a registered address for Rick Ross Touring in his hometown of Miami, Florida turned out to be bogus, while a process server who attempted to reach the Hustlin' hitmaker at his Miami pad was told by one of the star's associates that he had no idea how to contact the rapper.
Servers have also tried to reach Ross at his concerts, but according to Ezechie, they are "hesitant to serve him while he is surrounded by security guards".
However, the plaintiff may not have to track Ross down in person - a judge ruled last week (ends18May14) that if he is unable to formally serve the defendants with papers before a hearing on 4 June (14), Ezechie can seek permission to notify the stars of the legal action via an alternative route, such as posting a message in a newspaper, according to the New York Post.
Rapper Rick Ross has been sued over allegations he is illegally using photographs without permission. In a lawsuit filed this month (May14), snapper Armen Djerrahian claims he photographed the hip-hop superstar for a magazine shoot, but now the images are being used in Ross' promotional campaigns without his agreement.
Djerrahian insists his copyrighted photos are being used in posters, adverts, websites and CD covers. He also claims artists from Ross' Maybach Music group, including Meek Mill, Gunplay and Omarion, have also been using his snaps without permission.
R&B singer Omarion is set to become a first-time father. The Ice Box hitmaker and his girlfriend Apryl Jones are expecting their first child, a son, later this summer (14).
He took to Instagram.com earlier this month (Mar14) to announce the news to his followers by posting a video of the baby's sonogram, along with a caption that read: "Say hi #comingsoon #thelegacybegins @aprylsjones is my heart, what a great gift! #ecstatic"
And unlike many celebrities who prefer to keep their personal lives private, Omarion tells OK! Magazine that he and Jones will be keeping his fans in the loop as they prepare to become parents.
He explains, "We have been sharing our pregnancy with the public through our Instagram and stuff like that. I embrace who I am. I just want my child to do the same thing. I love sharing it with my fans and people that grew up with me who may have their own kids. I think it’s so dope.
"So when my son comes of age, he’s going to be a part of the community of fans. So we have no problem with sharing the process of our pregnancy with the public."
He adds, "I'm completely excited and confident going into fatherhood... I'm excited about being responsible for someone. Being honest with someone. And sharing information and learning from someone else."
Rappers Rick Ross and Meek Mill and singers Wale and Omarion have been named in a new lawsuit over a London gig that never took place. The quartet is being sued for allegedly bailing on the September, 2012 Wembley Arena show after a promoter advanced a large portion of their performance fees.
The gig was initially rescheduled but talks broke down and the show didn't happen at all.
The promoter claims he also paid for the stars' flights and expenses, amounting to $93,281.26 (£58,300), according to TMZ.com.
R&B singer Omarion is facing a lawsuit from two fans who claim they were beaten up at one of the star's shows. The Ice Box hitmaker, real name Omari Grandberry, is being sued by Brunel Jordonne and Kenson Sainvilus, who claim they were caught up in a fight at the singer's concert in Newburgh, New York in September (12).
In the lawsuit, which also targets bosses of the Ole Bar & Grill gig venue, the two men insist Omarion and his team should have provided better security, according to TMZ.com.
Both men were reportedly hospitalised after the incident and are demanding unspecified damages.
And another MTV show bites the dust. Going the same way as the guidos from Jersey, America's Best Dance Crew is sweeping the floor and closing its doors to hopeful dance groups across the country. According to Variety, MTV reps confirmed the cancellation of the Randy Jackson-fronted show, stating "we are grateful to Randy Jackson and Warner Horizon for having brought our audience seven amazing seasons of dance with ABDC, and look forward to more successful and dynamic entertaining collaborations in the future."
Once a ratings juggernaut for the network, ABDC (as it was popularly shortened) once toppled the competition in the ratings—bringing in strong numbers in the 18 - 34 demographic sweet spot of MTV. But ratings began to tumble, especially after a scandal involving the only professional dancer at the judges' table, Shane Sparks. Sparks was removed from the show after child molestation allegations were uncovered after season four (the allegations were unrelated to the show itself). The show also featured former *NSYNCer JC Chasez, rapper Lil Mama, as well as a one-season judge Omarion.
With more credibility and name-recognition on other dance-related shows on bigger networks (Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance? to name a few), ratings numbers never returned to their former glory.
The bad news is another example of a Randy Jackson-associated show having an off-year in 2012. American Idol, the singing competition Jackson actually judges on, has been mired with controversy in an attempt to stay relevant after judges' turnover from last year. It will be interesting to see if Idol will be taken off life-support or left to live another day with the judging additions of Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, and the seemingly confrontational Nicki Minaj.
Hollywood.com has reached out for comment, but did not hear back at the time of publication.
