Former New York mob boss John Gotti, Jr. is recovering from a stab wound after becoming involved in a fight in Long Island, New York. The retired head of the Gambino crime family was reportedly trying to break up an altercation between two strangers in the parking lot of a CVS pharmacy on Sunday night (10Nov13) when he was struck in the stomach.
He was admitted to a local hospital for treatment, although details about his condition were unknown as WENN went to press.
Police have now launched an investigation into the incident, reports the New York Daily News.
The life of the 49 year old, who claims to have turned his back on the mob in 1999, is set to be the subject of an upcoming crime drama starring John Travolta as his father, who died behind bars in 2002.
Ben Foster was previously attached to portray Gotti, Jr. in Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father, but it is not yet clear if he is still onboard.
Joe Johnston is set to direct the project, which will also feature Sir Anthony Hopkins and Travolta's wife, Kelly Preston, as Gotti's spouse Victoria.
Mafia legend John Gotti's widow Victoria has been hospitalised, according to a U.S. report. The late crime boss' wife, who will be played by Kelly Preston in her husband John Travolta's upcoming biopic of the mob chief, suffered a stroke last week (begs13May13) and her children are currently asking for privacy as they cope with their mother's condition.
Marc Fiore, the producer behind the much-delayed film Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father, has also declined to comment on her alleged health woes, telling the New York Daily News, "This is a personal family crisis."
Gotti has suffered two strokes in the last eight years and she underwent surgery in 2007 to treat a blockage in her brain.
Preston is set to portray the 70 year old in the movie, while the actress' real-life partner Travolta will play the convicted Gambino family boss, who died behind bars in 2002.
Sir Anthony Hopkins has reportedly joined the cast of John Travolta's much-anticipated new movie about mobster John Gotti. Gotti: In The Shadow of My Father picked up Travolta as its lead in 2010, while Nick Cassavetes signed on as director and Lindsay Lohan and Joe Pesci were announced as potential co-stars.
Cassavetes and Pesci dropped out amid delays in 2011 and a deal with Lohan didn't pan out, prompting many Hollywood insiders to believe John Gotti, Jr.'s family drama would never be made.
But Travolta recently insisted he was still on board and now it appears the film is finally coming together - and it has some added star power.
The project's international distribution is up for sale at the Cannes Film Festival and executives at IM Global have announced that Hopkins has signed up for the film, although his role remains a mystery.
But Travolta is still set to play Gotti and his wife Kelly Preston will portray Gotti's partner Victoria, while the couple's daughter, Ella, will play Gotti kid Angel.
It is not clear if Ben Foster, who was attached to play Gotti's son, is still on board.
John Travolta will finally get the chance to play Mafia don John Gotti after Joe Johnston came on board as director. Gotti: Three Generations has hit a series of setbacks over the last few years, with Lindsay Lohan dropping out of the project and Joe Pesci successfully suing producers after they changed his part.
The film is now back on track after Captain America: The First Avenger filmmaker Johnston was hired to take the helm.
A statement from the director reads, "I think we've always been fascinated with the idea of the romantic outlaw. John Gotti could be in one instance a charismatic, kind and loving family man, and in another, deadly to his enemies. The opportunity to tell the true story of Gotti with John Travolta is a director's dream."
Travolta adds, "I'm looking forward to portraying John Gotti - it's been a long time coming. And I think that Johnston is an exciting and fresh addition to the vision of the film. We are all looking forward to starting production."
The stalled project will now begin shooting in New York in September (13). The crime boss died behind bars in 2002.
The Goodfellas star signed a $3 million (£1.8 million) deal to play the gangster's associate and childhood pal Angelo Ruggiero in Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father, alongside John Travolta and Kelly Preston.
He filed suit against Fiore Films in July 2011, claiming he had piled on weight to portray Ruggiero, only to be told he would be playing a smaller part.
His attorney, Jessica Trotter, confirmed on Monday (04Feb13) that Pesci has reached a undisclosed out-of-court settlement with bosses at the production company.
Travolta will play Gotti in the film. The crime boss died behind bars in 2002.
"We finally have a script everybody loves and hopefully this year we'll do it." John Travolta insists his stalled John Gotti biopic, Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father, is back on track after a series of delays. The film was initially billed to feature Joe Pesci and Lindsay Lohan but it's not clear if either star is still a part of the project.
The Mean Girls star was in talks to play John Gotti's wife Kim in the biopic, opposite John Travolta, but negotiations broke down last year (11) and Lohan pulled out of the project completely.
Gotti producer Marc Fiore released a statement on Thursday (07Jun12), suggesting he was still keen on landing Lohan for his film, which starts shooting later this year (12).
He wrote, "Lindsay does not have a contract. But right now, we're not in the phase of doing casting. I still have every intention of speaking to Lindsay about the role of Kim Gotti. There's no truth to Lindsay being out of the film."
But her rep Steve Honig begs to differ.
He states, "I can confirm that Lindsay has not signed on to be a part of the John Gotti movie, nor is she in talks to join the cast. It does not look like an agreement can be made. Lindsay's representatives and film producers were unable to come to an agreement."
He adds, "Lindsay has the utmost respect for (director) Barry Levinson and the producers and hopes to work with them in the future and wishes them all the best."
Lohan is currently portraying Elizabeth Taylor in TV biopic Liz & Dick, about the late movie icon's turbulent romance with Welsh acting great Richard Burton.
The Mean Girls star agreed in principal to star in the John Gotti biopic last year (11) and appeared at an event to launch the film, but deal talks broke down and she moved on to Elizabeth Taylor project Liz & Dick, which she has just started shooting in California.
However, Gotti producer Marc Fiore tells X17.com he's still hoping to land Lohan as the mob boss' wife Kim Gotti.
He says, "We don't have an agreement with Lindsay. That is correct. Lindsay does not have a contract. But right now, we're not in the phase of doing casting. I still have every intention of speaking to Lindsay about the role of Kim Gotti. There's no truth to Lindsay being out of the film."
And asked if Travolta's recent tabloid massage scandal has prompted him to reconsider the casting of the movie star as mob boss Gotti, Fiore adds, "Of course, John is still playing John Gotti. The media doesn't scare me."
The Pulp Fiction star is set to play the lead role of John Gotti in Gotti: Three Generations, but recent rumours suggested Hollywood bosses had abandoned the project after two masseurs filed sexual assault lawsuits against their leading man.
The lawsuits were subsequently withdrawn and dismissed, and Gotti: Three Generations executive producer Marc Fiore is adamant production was never affected by the false allegations.
He says, "I don't know why someone would say something so silly. I would not walk away from my movie because of bad PR. We are moving full steam ahead and John Travolta is still playing Gotti. John has been around quite a while... bad PR means good box office. I'm not too worried about it to be quite honest about it."
Shooting is scheduled to start in November (12).
The plaintiff, identified only as John Doe, sued Travolta earlier this month (May12), claiming the Grease star touched his genitals and sexually propositioned him during a massage at the Beverly Hills Hotel on 16 January (12).
Travolta's attorney Marty Singer immediately dismissed the allegations, insisting that his client wasn't even in California on the day the plaintiff claims to have met the actor.
And now it appears the accuser has changed his mind.
In a statement, Singer writes, "My client is completely vindicated by Doe #1 dropping his claims and dismissing his lawsuit."
And the lawyer fully expects another unnamed masseur who also filed a suit against Travolta to move to dismiss his case too: "We fully expect that my client will similarly be vindicated with respect to Doe #2, as well as with respect to any other person who makes meritless claims against John Travolta."
