Andy Samberg and his new wife Joanna Newsom were given the royal treatment during a recent layover in Dubai after local airport officials mistook the comedian for The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield. The former Saturday Night Live actor, who recently won a Golden Globe award for his new TV comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and singer Newsom were en route to the Maldives for their belated honeymoon over the New Year (14) when they made a stopover in the United Arab Emirates - and they were pleasantly surprised as they were welcomed to the country by a greeting party.
However, Samberg soon realised the special treatment was the result of a case of mistaken identity.
He explains, "We got off the plane and in Dubai... there was a team waiting for us, 'Oh, Mr. Andrew, Mr. Andrew!'... and we were like, 'Oh, this is so nice, our travel agent must have really hooked it up.' And they were like, 'Everyone wants to take a picture with you guys.' I was like, 'OK, they know who we are in Dubai...!'
"We were getting the royal treatment and I was like, 'Man, they must have YouTube out here (to watch his shows) because we're really getting it done up.' Then right before we left the airport... the woman who had greeted us there... said, 'So, are you going to make any new Spider-Man films soon?' And I was like, 'Oh, she thinks I'm Andrew Garfield because my name's Andrew (on his passport)...'
"I didn't know what else to do, so I just said, 'Yes. You know, they're a lot of work, but we do it for the fans.' It made me feel so bad for her because I imagine she posted the photo we all took on Facebook...!"
Samberg and Newsom wed in September (13).
Comedian Andy Samberg is a married man after exchanging vows with his fiancee on Saturday (21Sep13). The former Saturday Night Live funnyman married his partner of five years, Joanna Newsom, at a ceremony in Big Sur, California in front of family and friends, as well as singer/actor Justin Timberlake and his wife Jessica Biel.
Samberg, who proposed to Newsom in February (13), previously said of his wedding planning, "So far, it's been nothing but stress and joy. The joy is the lady herself. The stress is the planning. We tried to go small and it was just impossible. There's too many relatives, too many friends."
Funnyman Andy Samberg and singer/songwriter Joanna Newsom will wed this week (ends22Sep13), according to the comedian's new TV co-star Terry Crews. The Expendables star let the news slip while promoting their new show Brooklyn Nine-Nine on TV in America on Tuesday (17Sep13).
Asked about his relationship with his co-star, Crews said, "He's getting married this week."
Crews, who will miss the wedding because he's too busy promoting his new comedy series, admits he has had a heart-to-heart chat with Samberg about the sanctity of marriage.
He tells Access Hollywood Live, "I've been married 24 years, so I'm like, 'Dude, be serious, this is real.'"
News of Samberg's engagement to his girlfriend of five years broke in February (13).
That wasn't a d**k in a box, it was a ring! Comedian Andy Samberg just got engaged to Joanna Newsom (and no, she didn't throw the ring on the ground). A rep for the Saturday Night Live alum and Lonely Island member confirmed to Us Weekly that the 34-year-old is getting married to his singer-songwriter girlfriend, 31. They have been dating for five years.
Samberg was into Newsom even before they met through mutual friends. "He liked her music and would go to her shows," a friend of Samberg's told the mag last year. "He had the biggest crush on her." The feelings were mutual for Newsom, as well. "She respects what he does with his songs," the friend said. "She's so proud of everything that he has accomplished [with Lonely Island]."

Hollywood.com reached out for comment but did not immediately get a response. Now that Samberg is headed down the aisle, maybe this will inspire new material for Lonely Island. Perhaps some marital sketches and songs? We know Samberg can put a new spin on old romance, thanks to his unforgettable "Mother Lover" collaboration/sequel to "D**k in a Box" with his recently married friend Justin Timberlake:
Even a celebratory "I Just Got Engaged" video in the same vein as "I Just Had Sex" would be awesome:
But we hope Samberg doesn't get any ideas about recreating "The Golden Rule"... we still have nightmares about that one.
