Hollywood star Richard Gere has been attacked for withdrawing his much-needed
donations from a struggling home for child AIDS victims in India, because his
trust claims it cannot renew its contract.
The Gere Foundation India Trust in Delhi gave nearly $200,000 to
the Naz Foundation during a three-year agreement to help out, but they have now
decided to stop funding the home, plunging it into dire straits.
Naz foundation head Anjali Gopalan explains, "Richard has done so, so much
for the orphanage and we had always hoped he would continue to support us.
"The concern for me and others who work with child victims of the disease is
obvious. The strategy--for which Richard Gere has never shown any support--is
not reflective of heart-felt investment but of U.S. foreign policy aggressively
promoting Christian (sexual) abstinence.
"AIDS sufferers, it seems, no longer fit into the equation."
