British thespian Brian Blessed has been forced to withdraw from a production of Shakespeare's King Lear after collapsing onstage during a performance last week (19Jan15). The 78-year-old Flash Gordon star fainted and fell off a raised platform, prompting co-star Noel White to ask for the services of a doctor among the audience at the Holy Trinity Church in Guildford, England.
Blessed, who underwent a heart operation three years ago, returned to the stage to complete the show after a brief interlude, but now his doctors have advised him not to continue, telling the actor his heart condition is "more serious that he was aware".
A spokesman for the play says, "On the advice of his specialist, and with a broken heart, Brian has therefore been compelled to withdraw from the production of which he is so proud.
"He is immensely grateful for the support he has received from The Guildford Shakespeare Company. Mr Blessed will be making no further comment at this time."
Actor Terence Wilton will replace Blessed in the show, which runs until 17 February (15).
Oscar-nominee Eddie Redmayne and Hugh Jackman are among celebrities donating their hats to a charity auction. The Theory of Everything actor has offered up his white panama hat for the auction, while Jackman, Ed Sheeran, Simon Pegg and Ricky Gervais have given signed baseball caps to the fundraising initiative.
Other highlights in the Celebrity Hat Auction include a white Stetson from Queen guitarist Brian May, Ozzy Osbourne's black fedora, Elvis Costello's brown trilby, a patterned flat cap from Hugh Laurie and Sting's cashmere beanie.
The online auction launches on Friday (23Jan15) and will close on 1 February (15). All profits raised will go to St Mungo's Broadway charity, which supports homeless and vulnerable men and women throughout the U.K.
Veteran British actor Brian Blessed collapsed during a performance of King Lear on Monday (19Jan15) but returned to the stage to finish the Shakespeare play after a 20-minute rest. The 78 year old had just begun his performance as the title character when he fainted and fell off a raised platform. His co-star Noel White announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is not part of the play. Is there a doctor in the house?" as Blessed's daughter Rosalind, who is also starring in the production, rushed to her father's side.
A surgeon in the audience tended to Blessed, who was escorted offstage, and to the audience's surprise he returned to continue his performance 20 minutes later, telling the crowd, "I feel such an idiot and I am not in the habit of doing this, but I have a little fibrillation (irregular heartbeat)."
Blessed managed to finish the show at the Holy Trinity Church in Guildford, England but occasionally clutched his chest and rolled his eyes during his performance, according to Britain's Daily Mail newspaper.
Director Caroline Devlin said afterwards, "Brian was an inspirational wonder. He had a small heart operation three years ago... We are not entirely sure why he became so dizzy but he is a 20 year old in a 78 year old's body. There was no stopping him."
Two rare singles Jack White hid in a piece of furniture at the beginning of his music career have been found. The rocker thought it would be fun to hide 100 copies of his band The Upholsterers' Your Furniture Was Always Dead... I Was Just Afraid To Tell You inside the lining of furniture he and pal Brian Muldoon were upholstering a decade ago, and now two of the vinyl singles have been found.
Confirming the news a spokesman for White's Third Man Records says, "Recently Third Man Records has been made aware of the discovery of two different copies found by two separate individuals of the second single by the Upholsterers.
"This duo, comprising of actual upholsterers Jack White and Brian Muldoon, pressed 100 copies of this single and proceeded to hide them in furniture being reupholstered by Muldoon in 2004, in celebration of his 25th year in the business."
Martin Sheen, Anjelica Huston, Stacy Keach and Diana Rigg have been forced to scrap plans to grace the Broadway stage in the current revival of A.r. Gurney's romantic play Love Letters after producers decided to close the show on Sunday (14Dec14). The two-person production, about letters exchanged over the years between a pair of childhood friends, has featured a rotating line-up since its launch in September (14), when Mia Farrow and Brian Dennehy were cast in the lead roles.
Carol Burnett took over from Farrow in October (14), while M*A*S*H star Alan Alda and Murphy Brown's Candice Bergen are currently starring in the drama on the Great White Way.
However, poor box office sales have prompted bosses to cut their losses and bring the Pulitzer Prize-nominated play's run to an end this weekend.
The closure means fans will not get to see Keach and Rigg interact onstage, nor Sheen and Huston, who were due to tread the boards in the New Year (15).
A U.S. tour of the Gregory Mosher production is still scheduled to launch at a later date.
Rocker Angus Young will call time on AC/DC when he gets too old to dress as a schoolboy and still look cool. The guitarist, 59, is known for his energetic live performances while wearing a blazer, shorts, cap, tie, and white socks, but he knows his onstage image is age-specific.
He is adamant the Highway to Hell hitmakers have no intention of rocking on into the grave, and he plans to bring the curtain down when fans start to snigger at his schoolboy outfit.
Young tells Sky News, "I don't want to get on there in front of them (and they are saying), 'What is that guy doing on there? That guy must be about 80 now and there he is, still trying to get into that school suit'."
Singer Brian Johnson adds, "You stop when you know you should. I think it's the old saying, when you know it's the right time you'll just (say), 'Let's quit while we're ahead'."

Actress Daniele Watts is refusing to bow to pressure to apologise for accusing California police of racial profiling following a run-in with cops earlier this month (Sep14). The black Django Unchained star and her white boyfriend, celebrity chef Brian James Lucas, were detained by officers on 11 September (14) amid reports suggesting the couple had been spotted engaging in lewd conduct in their parked car in Studio City.
An angry Watts declined to hand over identification during questioning and began to walk away, prompting police to apprehend and handcuff her before taking her back to the scene of the incident.
Both she and Lucas subsequently took to their Facebook.com pages and blasted cops for reportedly targeting them because they are an interracial couple, but the police sergeant at the centre of the case, Jim Parker, has since spoken out, insisting an audio recording of the whole encounter will prove he and his fellow officers were simply investigating calls from concerned passers-by.
The developments in the case prompted a number of local civil rights activists to call on Watts to apologise for blasting the police, but she remains defiant and in a statement released late on Friday (19Sep14), she maintains her innocence, insisting she did nothing wrong.
She simply states: "It is a constitutional right that we do not have to present ID to any member of law enforcement unless we are being charged with a crime."
Authorities have launched an internal investigation in light of Watts' accusations, although the actress' publicist, Bill McCoy, reveals the couple is not planning to take further action after previously threatening to sue.
