Actress Blake Lively's father has become the first known patient to undergo genetic therapy to heal his broken heart. Actor Ernie Lively has battled health problems since suffering a massive heart attack in 2003, but thanks to a groundbreaking medical procedure he is now feeling better than ever.
The 66 year old tells People magazine only half of his heart has been functioning properly in recent years, sapping him of energy and making it a real task just to walk up a flight of stairs.
On 7 November (13), the father-of-four underwent retrograde gene therapy, in which a patient's stem cells are injected into the heart to repair damaged muscle and arteries, and he's already beginning to notice a health boost.
He says, "I woke up the other morning and told my wife, 'I haven't felt this good in years'."
And Ernie is now making big plans for the rest of his life, adding, "I moved to Utah because of the snow, but I haven't been able to ski. I literally didn't have the heart to do it. Now, I'm excited about living the rest of my life instead of sitting around."
And he can't wait for his youngest daughter Blake to start a family, adding, "She is newly married (to actor Ryan Reynolds) and wants a big family. She says she wants 30 kids. I said, 'Why don't you start with one?'"
Kristen Bell marked her low-key wedding with Dax Shepard last month (16Oct13) by filming a love scene with her best friend's husband. The Forgetting Sarah Marshall star secretly tied the knot with her beau of six years in a spontaneous ceremony at a Beverly Hills, California courthouse - a wedding so small it only cost $142 (£88) and Bell's best friend, Amy Russell, was the only person on hand to serve as a witness.
In an interview with U.S. talk show host Ellen DeGeneres on Tuesday (26Nov13), Bell recalled their big day ended with her shooting love scenes for her TV series House of Lies - with Russell's real life husband.
Bell explained, "The interesting thing about that is her husband is an actor, Ryan Hansen, and I was going to work later that day and had a fairly intimate scene with him. So when I left my wedding I said to my best friend, 'Thanks for witnessing my wedding, I'm going to make pretend love to your husband... and I did."
When asked if Shepard ever gets jealous of her intimate scenes with her on-screen paramours, she admits, "He's surprisingly not jealous. He's so open and honest and wants to talk about everything. He's like a girl. No, he's super trusting and trustworthy. He could care less (sic)."
Bell and Hansen also worked together on cult TV show Veronica Mars, and both will star in the fan-funded big screen adaptation of the series, which is due out next spring (14).
Hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are fronting a new United Nations campaign calling for equal rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. The Thrift Shop hitmakers have been named Equality Champions for the Free & Equal initiative, joining the likes of Ricky Martin and Brazilian star Daniela Mercury to promote the cause.
Rapper Macklemore says, "We're so honoured to be working with the United Nations and Free & Equal to help spread a message of equality and respect. Ryan and I have always believed that human rights are for everyone - no exceptions."
U.N. officials launched the campaign in July (13) to raise awareness about homophobic and transphobic violence and discrimination, and encourage greater respect for the rights of LGBT people everywhere.
The news of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' new roles emerges just two days after they called for an end to racial profiling and paid tribute to slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin during an acceptance speech at the American Music Awards on Sunday (24Nov13). The stars delivered the message to the Los Angeles audience via satellite from Miami, Florida, where they were preparing for a concert.
Actress Kaley Cuoco is planning to usher in 2014 by marrying tennis player Ryan Sweeting in a festive ceremony on New Year's Eve, according to a U.S. report. The Big Bang Theory star became engaged to Sweeting in September (13) after only three months of dating, and she celebrated her impending nuptials by throwing a bridal shower over the weekend (22-23Nov13).
It has now emerged that Cuoco, 27, plans to begin 2014 as a married woman by holding her wedding on 31 December (13), according to Usmagazine.com.
The ceremony will reportedly be held in southern California and the reception will feature a 'fire and ice' theme.
Bono and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin helped raise $26 million (£17.3 million) for charity by singing at a star-studded auction in New York on Saturday (23Nov13). The U2 frontman teamed with top designers Sir Jonathon Ive and Marc Newson to put together a collection of specially designed luxury items, from companies such as Hermes and Apple, for Jony and Marc's (RED) Auction at Sotheby's in Manhattan.
The event included a performance by Bono and Martin, who joined forces to sing a medley of U2's Beautiful Day and Lou Reed's Perfect Day, with the Coldplay star playing a custom-built red grand piano which was sold for $1.9 million (£1.3 million).
Other items featured in the sale included a storm trooper helmet from the Star Wars franchise signed by George Lucas which sold for $245,000 (£163,333).
The auction was attended by more than 1,000 guests including Harrison Ford, Meg Ryan, Courtney Love and Hayden Panettiere, and it raised around $13 million (£8.7 million) for Global Fund to Fight AIDs, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
The final total came in at around $26 million (£17.3 million) after executives of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation agreed to double the sales figure.
Taylor Swift was the golden girl at the 2013 American Music Awards on Sunday (24Nov13) as she took home four top honours, including Artist of the Year. The I Knew You Were Trouble hitmaker, who wowed in a shimmering gold Julien Macdonald mini dress, earned Favorite Female Artist accolades in both the Pop/Rock and Country categories, while the blonde beauty also scored best album for Red in the latter genre.
Justin Timberlake enjoyed a stellar night too, claiming a trio of trophies, while British boyband One Direction celebrated their first ever AMAs for Favorite Band, Duo or Group - Pop/Rock and Favorite Album - Pop/Rock for their second release Take Me Home.
Rihanna was feted with the inaugural Icon Award in recognition of her massive global success and she received a standing ovation from the celebrity-packed audience at the Nokia Theater L.A. Live in Los Angeles.
Her mentor and Roc Nation label boss Jay Z paid tribute to his charge in a pre-taped video message, while Rihanna's mother, Monica Fenty, was on hand to play the proud parent as she presented the honour.
In her acceptance speech, Rihanna recalled terrorising her mum with her "annoying little man voice" as a child, before going on to express her gratitude to her devotees and her team, saying, "My fans, you have no idea. You keep me driven, you keep this thing special and right now I can't believe that at 25 years old I'm holding an Icon award, that is weird to even say out loud...
"I can't thank everybody but if you know me, you know that I love you and that I thank you and that I'm grateful. You all play such an important part and I'm only as good as my team so I love you guys so much, thank you."
Katy Perry kicked off the event by performing her new single Unconditionally dressed as a geisha in a set made to look like a Japanese cherry blossom garden, while One Direction, Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Arianna Grande and the surviving members of TLC also hit the stage, as did show host Pitbull, who teamed up with Timber collaborator Ke$ha.
Other performance highlights came from Jennifer Lopez, who dazzled in a special tribute to late Latin music icon Celia Cruz; Lady Gaga, who played a receptionist as she seduced R. Kelly as president for Do What U Want, and birthday girl Miley Cyrus, who donned a pink leotard adored with cats to close the show with a powerful and emotional rendition of Wrecking Ball.

Rapper Macklemore paid tribute to tragic Florida teenager Trayvon Martin and called for an end to racial profiling as he accepted an honour at the 2013 American Music Awards via satellite from the state. The Thrift Shop hitmaker was preparing for a gig with his producer pal Ryan Lewis on Sunday (24Nov13) when they learned they had won the Favorite Album - Rap/Hip-Hop prize for The Heist.
They delivered an acceptance speech to the audience at the Los Angeles prizegiving via video link from Miami, and Macklemore used the opportunity to urge fans and viewers to take a stand against race discrimination in the aftermath of Martin's death last year (12), when the unarmed black youth was shot by Neighbourhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman.
Macklemore said, "It has been an absolutely incredible year, I feel extremely blessed to be accepting an award from the AMAs and now that I'm sitting here in front of millions of people, I'd like to address something extremely important to me...
"I was talking to my friend... before the show and he reminded me of a great Martin Luther King quote. He said, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice anywhere', and due to the fact that we are in Florida tonight accepting this award, I want to acknowledge Trayvon Martin and the hundreds and hundreds of kids each year that are dying due to racial profiling and the violence that follows it.
"This is really happening, these are our friends, our neighbours, our peers and our fans and it's time that we look out for the youth and fight against racism and the laws that protect it."
Zimmerman cited Florida's controversial Stand Your Ground law, which allows a person to use reasonable force to defend themselves if they feel their safety is threatened, and an all-female jury agreed he was justified in taking the student's life when he was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in July (13).
The verdict prompted mass demonstrations and inspired many leading human rights leaders and celebrities, including Jay Z and Beyonce, to speak out.
Kaley Cuoco was feted by her celebrity pals on Saturday (23Nov13) with a bridal shower brunch in honour of her impending nuptials with fiance Ryan Sweeting. On hand for the brunch was her The Big Bang Theory co-star Melissa Rauch, Mean Girls' Lacey Chabert and TV personality Ali Fedotowsky. Cuoco and tennis pro Sweeting became engaged in September (13) after only three months of dating.
Miley Cyrus and former basketball star Dennis Rodman have been named two of the Least Influential Celebrities of 2013 by America's GQ magazine. Editors at the U.S publication have compiled a list of the 25 stars who they believe are uninspiring to the general public, noting that this year "has been a bad year for impotent megalomaniacs."
In the shameful number one spot on the list is the ex-basketball player, who has garnered attention for his controversial friendship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Editors call Rodman a "Q-list celebrity willing to commit borderline treason just to hang out with a dictator who himself aspires to be a Q-list celebrity."
Embattled U.S. chef Paula Deen comes in at number two following her racial slur controversy this summer (13), and American politician Anthony Weiner rounds out the top three thanks to his 'sexting' scandal.
Meanwhile, pop star Cyrus, who turned 21 years old on Saturday (23Nov13), ranks sixth on the list for her provocative and racy performances over the past few months.
The magazine states, "Miley spent the entire year foam-finger-blasting herself, licking sledgehammers, and basically trying every inane strategy she could think of to rile up America's few remaining pearl clutchers. What's sad is that it totally worked."
Also making the list are Will Smith and his family, Justin Bieber, Ryan Reynolds and U.S. President Barack Obama at number 17.
Marc Anthony's ex-wife Dayanara Torres is demanding the Latin superstar increase his monthly child support payments from $13,000 (£8,670) to $112,000 (£74,670), according to a U.S. report. The former Miss Universe claims Anthony's salary has soared since they settled their 2004 divorce and custody over their two sons, Cristian, 12, and Ryan, 10, and she is preparing to fight for more money in court this week (begs25Nov13).
However, the salsa singer's lawyer, Daniel Jaffe, insists his client has paid more than his fair share to ensure the boys are well taken care of, in addition to $3,500 (£2,330) in spousal support.
Jaffe tells the New York Post, "Marc has paid every penny, well over $13,000 a month. (He) has paid for all of the kids' schooling, band lessons, camps, and all medical and dental costs. Virtually everything."
Anthony, who makes millions from touring, his clothing line with U.S. department store Kohl's, and his stake in the Miami Dolphins American football franchise, is planning to fight Torres' request.
The singer wed Jennifer Lopez just a week after his four-year union to second wife Torres was officially declared over, but Anthony's third marriage fell apart in 2012. He has since been romantically linked to Chloe Green, the daughter of Topshop founder Sir Philip Green.
