Thunderstorms couldn't keep Kings Of Leon from making their live comeback at the Made in America festival in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Sunday night (31Aug14).
Fans attending Jay Z's annual Labor Day weekend event feared they'd have to miss out on sets by Tiesto and Kings of Leon after organizers halted proceedings on Sunday evening and evacuated the Benjamin Franklin Parkway festival site as extreme weather rolled in. But after an hour-long pause, the gates re-opened and the event continued.
Kings of Leon drummer Nathan Followill, who broke his ribs in a tour bus crash at the beginning of August (14), was grateful - but sore after the show. He took to Twitter.com and wrote, "Thank you Philly for taking my mind off of the pain. I will be hurting tonight & tomorrow but it was worth it. Thanks for sticking around."
The rocker later added, "Almost home & I can't cry myself 2 sleep fast enough. Thank heavens for 2 days off before the next show. Fractured ribs are no joke? I ache."
The band scrapped a series of dates to allow Followill time to recover from his crash injuries. Meanwhile, the first Made in America festival in Los Angeles went off without many hitches with John Mayer, DJ Steve Aoki and Kanye West, who headlined Saturday's (30Aug14) festivities in Philadelphia, closing out the event on Sunday night.
Seven people were arrested at the Los Angeles event on Sunday and there were four felony arrests, including one for battery. Another 23 people were given alcohol citations, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Twenty nine people were arrested at the festival on Saturday.
Coldplay star Chris Martin became an honorary member of Kings Of Leon on Sunday (25May14) when he joined the U.S. rockers onstage at Radio 1's Big Weekend festival in Glasgow, Scotland. The Yellow singer was all smiles as he teamed up with Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill for part of the group's opening set, just hours after his band had closed out Saturday night (24Jun14) at the festival.
The impressive weekend line-up also included appearances by One Direction, Calvin Harris, Lily Allen, Paolo Nutini, Katy Perry, The Vamps, Rita Ora and John Newman, who was thrilled to be a part of the big event.
Speaking backstage, the singer said, "It's crazy, Kings Of Leon have just come onstage... and One Direction yesterday at 1pm - it's opening up strong straight away. To be given a main stage opportunity the first year I've done it solo is incredible and I've kind of got to make the most out of it.
"I've played Glasgow and I've got a weird curse about travelling to Glasgow where my bus breaks down or we're always late or something, but we always manage to get here, and every time we do get here you know it's always an incredible gig, so thank you to Glasgow."
Kings Of Leon frontman Caleb Followill has warned his fellow musicians not to mess with him, because he knows how to get them so drunk, they make a fool of themselves before thousands. The singer recalls a vengeful moment on the 2003 Lollapalooza tour when another, unidentified act was mean to Followill and his then-unknown bandmates.
He tells Entertainment Weekly magazine, "They were really cocky towards us. Everything they would say was very backhanded, and they were always bragging about their success.
"We got fed up, so we invited their guitar player on our bus, knowing that he had to go on stage in about a half hour. I was like, 'Hey man, let me pour you a drink'. He drank it, and I was like, 'One more for the road'. And I overdosed him once again.
"He barely got through the set - it was an awful night for the guy. Now looking back, part of me feels bad, but we won that battle. You be a d**k and I'm gonna embarrass you in front of a lot of of people! I don't think they're still a band now, but if I ever see him (guitarist), I don't think he'll be saying anything to me."
The hot wives of singers John Legend and Caleb Followill have landed the coveted cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Legend's new bridge Chrissy Teigen and the Kings of Leon frontman's wife Lily Aldridge share the front of the annual magazine with Nina Adgal, who has romanced singers Max George and Adam Lambert.
The trio of models end Kate Upton's two-year stint as the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue's cover girl.
Legend reveals Teigen sobbed when she learned she'd be on the cover of the magazine.
He says, "She cried like a baby. She was so excited... It was a surprise, because you never really know who's going to be on the cover. There are all these beautiful women.
"She's been in the issue for several years now, and every year, it's been someone else. And this year it's her. We're very excited about it."
Expressing her excitement on Twitter.com, Teigen adds, "I just cannot believe it. What an honor. Never, ever, ever have (I) felt this kind of pure joy. Crazy crazy."
Kings Of Leon stars Jared, Nathan and Caleb Followill are in mourning following the passing of their grandfather. Leon Followill died on Thursday (09Jan14) and the sad news prompted drummer Nathan to share his feelings with fans on Twitter.com.
He wrote, "The world lost a beautiful soul today. RIP Grandpa Leon Followill. My heart is broken into a million pieces."
Kings Of Leon stars Nathan and Caleb Followill realised they were destined to become rock stars after sneaking into a karaoke bar as teenagers and performing Wild Cherry's Play That Funky Music. The siblings couldn't believe their luck when their rendition of the song took the audience by storm - and won them a clutch of female fans.
Caleb tells Entertainment Weekly magazine, "It was my 18th birthday, on Bourbon Street (in New Orleans, Louisiana)... and that was actually the first time I ever got onstage and sang.
"A woman flashed us and we looked at each other and were like, 'All right, I guess this is what we're gonna do forever'."
"I'd hide their names throughout the lyrics. It was a great song but it was a folksy-sounding song and the rest of the record is more fast paced, rock 'n' roll, so it didn't make the cut." Kings Of Leon frontman Caleb Followill proved he is now a real family man by incorporating the names of the band's wives and children, including his daughter Dixie Pearl, in a song for their new album Mechanical Bull.
Fiona Apple is beautiful, scarily talented, and a wonderful performer, but whatever you do, do not be predictable around her. At the end of August, after the crowd at her performance for the Louis Vuitton Timeless Muses party in Tokyo wouldn’t simmer down, Apple climbed atop her piano and told the audience to “shut the f**k” up. Shockingly, the crowd failed to stop talking after Apple's polite request, so she yelled, “Predictable! Predictable fashion, what the f**k?,” and stormed off the stage.
In honor of her dramatic walkout, here’s a look at 5 other stars that are in the running for Drama Queen of the Music World.
Axl Rose What would a walkout list be without Axl Rose? Rose has always had a tense relationship with his fans and has been the muse of many bottle-throwings, riots, and boos. A paradigm of the temperamental rock star, he’s walked off of stages and caused riots since 1992. His latest stage fit was in 2010 at a concert in Dublin. After the crowd refused to stop throwing bottles onto the stage, Rose walked off the stage. Before you go full-on Team Axl, though, let it be noted that Rose had taken the stage ninety minutes late.
Billie Joe Armstrong In 2012, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong famously entertained the crowd at the iHeartRadio festival with a glorious tirade protesting the fact that their set was cut by twenty minutes, courtesy of Usher’s long performance. After being told that they only had one minute left for their performance, Armstrong began ranting about how he’s been around since “198-f**king-8” so people should respect him, since he’s not “f**king Justin Bieber” (I would hope not, the mere legality of that is questionable). Armstrong smashed his guitar on stage a few times before walking off the stage and into a PR-mandated rehab.
Morrissey Morrissey is no stranger to cooking up a storm of controversy, and his 2009 Coachella performance was no different. Offended by the smell of barbecued meat wafting through the air, the rocker stopped his set and said, “I can smell burning flesh and I hope to God it’s human.” Morrissey walked off the stage, only to return a few minutes later and restart his performance, explaining, “The smell of burning animals is making me sick. I just couldn’t bear it.” Frustrating as it may have been, at least Morrissey came back and only wanted humans to be burning alive instead of animals.
Caleb Followill Kings of Leon have may as well have the word “Drama” in front of their band name. The band famously walked off a St. Louis stage in 2010 after getting attacked by a vicious gang of pigeons who flew around pooping on the band (not the fans), and reportedly even pooped in bassist Jared Followill’s mouth. Clearly the pigeons weren’t fans of the band, and KOL walked off after only 3 songs. In 2011, though, lead singer Caleb Followill walked out of a Dallas show, even though not one pooping pigeon was seen. Claiming he was just dehydrated because of the heat and needed a beer, Followill angered many fans by not returning to the stage, even though he said he would. Brother Jared Followill told the booing crowd to “F**king hate Caleb, not us.” There’s that brotherly support.
Jack White Jack White played a show in 2012 at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall, only to walk off the stage after fifty-five minutes. Many rumors/explanations were going around as to why White left the show early, none of which made sense. Some said that White was upset because the audience didn’t seem as they were into the show, since at one point White asked the crowd, “Jesus Christ, is this an NPR convention?” (maybe someone should’ve told White that even if they wanted to, audiences can’t get up out of their seats or dance around in aisles at the Radio City Music Hall?). Others stated that White is a perfectionist and was frustrated with the sound quality because that’s “rock and roll.” Did someone change the definition of rock and roll and forget to tell the rest of us?

"If they had, they knew I would have laughed at that. I have way too strong of a will to ever need to go somewhere." Kings Of Leon star Caleb Followill dismisses reports suggesting his bandmates ordered him to rehab after falling ill during a Dallas, Texas gig in July, 2011, and walking offstage.
"Back then, we were trying to do something that people remember. Now I'm trying to do something that makes my daughter proud. One day, hopefully I'll still be here, but if I'm not, she'll be like, 'My dad was f**kin' cool.'" Kings Of Leon frontman Caleb Followill on what drives him to make music.
