Biography

Adam Driver really lives up to his last name. An occasional theatre performer and singer in his suburban Indiana high school, the intense but directionless Driver signed up for the Marines shortly after 9/11 and spent nearly three years training for overseas combat before being honorably discharged. After graduating from the famed Juilliard School, Driver brought his darkly magnetic presence to a string of minor TV appearances and landed small roles in HBO's Dr. Kevorkian biopic "You Don't Know Jack" (2010) and the lumbering "J. Edgar" (2011). But it was his performance on the buzzy, bruising "Girls" (HBO, 2012- ) as Adam, Lena Dunham's emotionally complicated boyfriend, that brought him into the spotlight; follow-up roles in the high-profile "Lincoln" (2012) and the indie hit "Frances Ha" (2012) ensured he stayed there. In between films, Driver, along with rumored girlfriend Joanne Tucker, founded Arts in the Armed Forces, a non-profit organization that stages theatrical and musical performances for members of the military. Driver has a lot to say, and all we need to do is sit back and listen.

"You have to be so disciplined. That was such great training for me, to make a goal and meet it. Not everyone has to go to the Marine Corps to do that, but it’s what it took for me." - from Theater.NYTimes.com, Feb. 11, 2011

.

"Acting, to me, has been many things: It’s a business, and it’s a craft, and it’s a political act—it’s whatever adjective is most applicable. But I also consider it a deep service, and combining those two worlds seemed to be a way I could continue my military service and not do something as self-indulgent as acting can be." - from Vogue.com, Jan. 17, 2013

.

Applied to Juilliard on a whim to see if he cold get in; he graduated in 2009
