Adam Wingard has signed on to direct upcoming blockbuster Godzilla Vs. Kong.

The  filmmaker and screenwriter is known for his works in the horror genre, including movies such as You’re Next, The Guest and 2016’s Blair Witch reboot.

Wingard will now be tackling a new genre, having closed a deal with Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. to helm Godzilla vs. Kong, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The flick has been in the works since 2015, with Legendary assembling its “writers’ room” to develop the story, which will see the two iconic movie monsters pitted against each other.

Following the announcement, Wingard took to Twitter to express his excitement about the project.

“Wow I’ve never had so many congratulatory messages in such a short amount of time. Thank you! I am disgustingly invested in these monsters,” he stated, adding, “In all seriousness I’m really very excited. This is a total playground.”

It was previously announced that screenwriter Terry Rossio, who co-wrote the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, was heading up the writing team of seven experienced scribes.

Plot and casting details remain under wraps, but the film is slated to hit theaters in May 2020. It is also unknown whether the stars of the recently released Kong: Skull Island, which featured Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson, will reprise their roles.

The same is true of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, set to be released in 2019, which is being directed by Michael Dougherty, and will star Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga.
