After announcing that she had to cancel her U.S. tour due to a bad case of laryngitis about a month ago, Adele emphasized the severity of her condition posting on her website a statement that explains she has to cancel all of her remaining shows for the rest of the year. It reads, “It is with deep regret that Adele has been forced to cancel her remaining live dates and promotional appearances in 2011. She is to undergo surgery to alleviate the current issues with her throat, and a full recovery is expected. As a result, doctors have ordered her to rest her voice and completely recuperate before looking to schedule any work commitments.”
When the first round of cancellations was made, Adele went to great lengths on her website to apologize to her fans and explain that the only way for her to get well again was to allow it ample time to heal. She wrote, “Singing is literally my life, it’s my hobbie, my love, my freedom and now my job. I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or I risk damaging my voice forever. I have great confidence in believing you know how much this upsets me, how seriously I take it and how truly devastated and annoyed I am by this. Wanting to do something so bad and not being able to is the most frustrating thing as I’m sure you know!… But please have faith in me that this is the only thing I can do to make sure I can always sing and always make music for you to the best of my ability. Truly yours and yours only forever.” It’s pretty safe to say that her disappointment has exponentially grown in size.
The specific kind of surgery Adele is scheduled to have is not known, but Rolling Stone consulted a few surgeons who said that since her condition doesn’t seem to be improving on its own, she could undergo the same kind of procedure Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler had in 2006, which had him singing five months later. Dr. Steven Zeitels, director of the Center for Laryngeal Surgery and Voice Rehabilitation at Massachusetts General Hospital told the magazine, “This is not something that’s a deal breaker, even remotely.” As refreshing as that is to hear, it’s certainly a recovery time that Adele must find completely demoralizing. But hopefully she realizes we’ll be on the other side of those five months with five months worth of money to spend on her.
