There’s no two ways about it — Adele owned 2011. After the release of her second album, 21, in February, the British singer became a staple in the music industry. I mean, who knew going through a breakup could lead to so much success, right? Her powerful lyrics — saturated with heartache and regret — resonate with fans in deep and meaningful ways. I suppose you could say her love loss is our gain, but one thing’s for sure — Adele rolled deep in chart-topping hits this year, which is why Billboard declared her the Number 1 artist of 2011!
Rihanna earned the respectable Number 2 spot, followed by Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne (who was the top male artist). Rounding out the list were Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Chris Brown. Billboard’s complete list, which was announced today, determined the rankings by evaluating album sales, charting singles, radio airplay and several other seemingly complicated factors. But I think we can agree all of these singers earned the right to be on this list. Congratulations to all the artists for their outstanding contributions!
