On Dec 13, legendary Growing Pains actor Alan Thicke was playing hockey with his 19-year-old son when he suffered from a heart attack. The 69-year-old was rushed to a hospital where he later passed away.

Friends and family finally know the exact cause of death. According to PeopleThicke died from a “ruptured aorta” and a “standard type A aortic dissection.” Though he was immediately taken to Providence St. Joseph’s Medical Center, he died minutes after the rupture occurred.

According to onlookers, Thicke was “in great spirits” at the ice rinks before he passed.

“Alan had taken a few shifts and seemed to be fine,” said the insider. “Then during a shift, he seemed to falter, and skated to the bench…He was sitting on the bench, hunched over, then started experiencing pain. He laid down and started moaning loudly, holding his head. We called 911 and the paramedics came within two to three minutes. He was conscious and had stopped moaning by the time they took him out and to the hospital.”

Thicke’s family continue to mourn the loss of their patriarch and ask for privacy during this difficult time. His famous son, Robin Thicke, shared a tearful statement about his father saying he was “the best friend” he ever had.

“He was the best man I ever knew. The best friend I ever had,” he said. “Let’s all rejoice and celebrate the joy he brought to every room he was in. We love you Alan Thicke. Thank you for your love.”
