Ali Campbell denies he was involved in bar brawl with Judge Brett Kavanaugh

Former Ub40 frontman Ali Campbell has confirmed he’s not the man U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was involved in a bar brawl with following one of their gigs.
Kavanaugh’s conduct as a high school and college student has come under scrutiny after three women accused him of sexually assaulting them in his youth – potentially derailing his confirmation as one of America’s top judges. In denying the allegations, the 53-year-old has sought to play down stories of youthful drinking, but on Monday (1Oct18) The New York Times reported that Kavanaugh was questioned by police over a fight in a New Haven, Connecticut bar in 1985 with a patron he believed was Campbell.
Speaking to The Guardian, the Red Red Wine singer, 59, expressed bemusement at being involved in the political story of the moment.
“I first found out that my name was being dragged into the biggest news story of the year when I woke up and my wife came in and said: ‘What’s all this about you and Brett Kavanaugh?’,” he explained. “I said: ‘I have absolutely no idea.’ Then people started ringing up asking for a comment on this supposed ruckus (fight) in a bar between him and someone who looked like me in 1985. My obvious comment is: ‘It wasn’t me!'”
The New York Times published a police report showing Kavanaugh and four men were questioned, but not arrested over the alleged incident – and that the future judge was accused of throwing ice at the victim. A classmate claimed the group approached the man as they believed he was the British musician.
Campbell added that he would remember if he were at the centre of the brawl – and that he is surprised a right-wing Republican was at one of their gigs – as the reggae group have always favoured left-wing causes.
UB40 have now split in two, with Ali performing with one iteration, UB40 featuring Ali, Astro and Mickey, and his brothers Robin and Duncan leading a group retaining the original name.
