Anthony Bate dies

Bate died on Tuesday morning (19Jun12) after he was taken ill last week (14Jun12).

The actor is best known for his role of Oliver Lacon in 1979 BBC adaptation of John le Carre’s spy classic Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and he reprised the role in 1982’s Smiley’s People.

Typically cast as a villain, Bate had numerous screen credits to his name including TV parts in The Avengers, The Saint, A Touch Of Frost and Prime Suspect.

Bate’s agent Roger Charteris said he would be “greatly missed”.
