Biography

Apolo Ohno's speed and agility on ice helped make him one of the most decorated Winter Olympians of all time. Raised by a single father who realized his son's competitive spirit at a young age, Ohno took up short track speedskating in his early teens and quickly rose up the ranks in the sport. He made his Winter Olympic Games debut in 2002, participating in the internationally watched event held in Salt Lake City, UT. The odds-on favorite to win, Ohno claimed a gold and a silver medal, despite minor controversies and disqualifications that surrounded the speedskating event. His triumph in Salt Lake City turned Ohno into one of the most recognized and loved U.S. athletes, with successful sponsorships from Coca-Cola and McDonald's that boosted his career outside the speedskating arena. Ohno added more medals to his growing collection at the 2006 Olympics held in Turin, Italy, where he nabbed a gold and two bronze. The following year, he displayed the athleticism, grace, and competitive spirit on the dance floor as a contestant on "Dancing with the Stars" (ABC, 2005- ). His skilled footwork and natural charm helped Ohno beat out other celebrity hopefuls to win his season, all the while diligently training for speedskating competitions. In 2010, Ohno won two silver medals at the Olympics in Vancouver, B.C., which landed him in the record books and established him as a hero and role model for young athletes all over the world.
