Film historian, critic, teacher, and author, Knight was a leading figure in the growth of academic film studies. His former students at USC include filmmakers George Lucas, Robert Zemeckis, John Carpenter, and Randal Kleiser. "The Liveliest Art", Knight's popular history of the cinema, has been widely used as a textbook.
