Audra McDonald and Alan Cumming take part in Kiss of the Spider Woman reading

Tony Award winners Audra Mcdonald and Alan Cumming are so keen to star in a Broadway revival of Kiss Of The Spider Woman they took part in a reading of the musical last week (ends09Jan15). Actress/singer McDonald took on the title role in the low-key session, with Scottish star Cumming playing gay prisoner Molina and Rescue Me actor Steven Pasquale portraying his tortured cellmate, Maxist revolutionary Valentin.
Once director John Tiffany oversaw the reading, which was put together by producer Tom Kirdahy, who is married to Terrence McNally, the man who originally adapted the story for the stage from the 1976 novel by Argentine author Manuel Puig.
Kirdahy reveals all participants were “thrilled” by the read-through, but as yet, there are no real plans to take the show to Broadway.
He tells the New York Times, “I think everyone is interested in having further conversations, but there is no game plan for a production at this point.”
The show, about the bond between the two prisoners, features music by acclaimed duo John Kander and Fred Ebb.
It previously hit the stage in London’s West End in 1992 and transferred to Broadway in 1993, when it won the Tony Award for Best Musical.
