Shark attack victim Bethany Hamilton has pulled her name from the list of nominees ahead of Wednesday night’s (13Jul16) ESPY Awards in Los Angeles.
The one-armed surfer, whose survival tale inspired the film Soul Surfer, is no longer up for the Best Female Athlete with a Disability prize.
She was nominated alongside marathon racer Tatyana McFadden, volleyball player Heather Erickson, cross-country skier Oksana Masters, and cyclist Shawn Morelli.
“At Bethany’s request she has been removed from the category,” a spokesman for the awards show states.
Hamilton, 26, won the Best Comeback Athlete award in 2004 after surviving a shark attack in 2003, when she was 13.
It is not known why Hamilton pulled her name from the ESPYs nominees.
