Beyonce Was Mortified by West’s MTV Outburst

Beyonce has broken her silence over Kanye West‘s infamous outburst at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, insisting she was horrified when the rapper interrupted Taylor Swift to voice his support for his friend.

The “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” hitmaker lost out to Swift for the Best Female Video prize at last month’s ceremony — but the country singer’s big moment was ruined when West stormed the stage in protest and proclaimed that it belonged to Beyonce.

West has since apologized and made amends with Swift, and while Beyonce admits she was mortified by the “Stronger” star’s behavior, she knows he had her best interests at heart.

She tells O: The Oprah Magazine, “Well, I knew his intentions, and I knew he was standing up for art; and he told me before, when they said the nominees, he’s like, ‘You have this award.’ And when they didn’t call my name he was, like, completely shocked. And when he walked on the stage, I was like, ‘No, no, no!’ and then he spoke, and I was like, ‘Oh, no, no, no!’

“But in the end, it ended up being a great night, and Taylor Swift did get her moment — and I didn’t have to make an acceptance speech.”
