In an interview with ABC’s Nightline (set to air tonight at 11:35 PM), the Oscar-winning actor says he realizes he “blew it” with his former wife — who is currently engaged to Brad Pitt — because he didn’t think he was “good enough for her.”
“She has one way she wanted to live her life and I had another way to live mine,” Thornton says. “I was just too insecure.” The 56-year-old star went on to say that compared to his stunning ex-wife, he felt “like the Phantom of the Opera hiding in the catacombs.”
Thornton also admits that his 36-year-old ex-wife’s rise to fame also put an added amount of strain on their marriage. “When you’re in a relationship, any two celebrities or whatever, you know, I think that puts on a lot of pressure,” he says. “When Angie and I got married, during that time, I was more famous than she was to start with and then she becomes this big thing, it’s hard in these relationships.”
But the Bad Santa star says he’s probably the most to blame in regards to his failed marriage. “We had a great marriage and I chickened out because I didn’t feel good enough,” he says. “That’s all that happened. It was no big deal, we never hated each other.” And to this day, he still claims they’re both “good friends.” Let’s not forget they were once blood buddies.
