Today is Britney Spears‘ 30th birthday. And even though this further proves just how old we’re all getting, it’s also a cause for celebration. Love her or hate her, Ms. Spears has contributed a lot to the music industry over the years, filling our heads and our iPods with her hit songs. While her personal life goes through its ups and downs, her career never seems to falter and continues to captivate fans from all over the world. So in honor of Spears turning the big 3-0, I put together a compilation of what I feel are her best music videos of all time, as a token of appreciation for all her artistic efforts. Happy Birthday Britney!
One of Britney’s classic videos, “Baby One More Time” really helped make her a star. All the girls wanted to be her, all the guys wanted to date her. And although I thought it wasn’t possible, she made pigtails cool again (that’s right, I said it). And let’s not forget those impressive dance moves that quickly turned a boring high school hallway into a full out rave. There was no doubt about it, this girl had some serious skills right from the start. And the little school girl outfit didn’t hurt her popularity either.
To say some of Britney’s videos were out of this world is not only an understatement, it’s also literally true. Her “Oops!…I Did It Again” one was set in space and contained equal amounts of fashion and rock solid dance techniques. You know this video made you want to sign up for astronaut school just so you could go have a dance party on some unknown planet. It also served as great background music for a breakup…not that I would know or anything. Heartbreak never sounded so good!
Just to show I’m not completely biased to just the old classics, “Toxic” provides as much entertainment as any other song. For a video to include a blond stewardess, a red-headed biker girl, and a dark haired mission impossible chic, all in the form of BSpears, you know it’s gotta be something spectacular. I mean, what more do you need? Plus the song was totally itself was totally relatable since everyone knows what it’s like to fall for someone you shouldn’t. Brit said it best — relationships are toxic stuff.
All girls experience heartache at some point in their lives, but Britney’s “Stronger” video helped remind us that it’s not the end of the world. She enforced the idea that breakups help make us stronger (get it) than we were before and don’t need a man to feel good about ourselves. Who knew that the pop star was so wise, right? And as if the female empowering lyrics weren’t enough to convince you, check out the impressive chair sequence and you’ll further understand my reasoning.
Finally, the “Circus” video makes an appearance in the ranking. This is probably one of my favorite Britney songs to date not just because of the lyrics and catchy beat, but because of the music video as well. The costumes were stunning, the choreography was insane, and the fact that it took place at a circus really added an extra element of excitement to it all. And although PETA was less than thrilled, throwing exotic animals into the mix always helps make music videos extra special. Lions, tigers, and Britney — oh my!
