Candice Glover brought the entire American Idol studio audience to their feet before she even finished her first chorus of The Cure‘s “Lovesong,” but the singer’s fellow Top 6 finalists weren’t surprised. They knew she was going to absolutely kill her performance, which was loosely based on Adele‘s version of the mournful tune.
Angie Miller tells Hollywood.com backstage after the Top 6 performance show that she knew something special was happening during dress rehearsals. “We all knew that this was going to happen,” she tells reporters. “Oh, we knew. We were like ‘Candice, tonight is your night, girl. You are going to kill it.’ And she did.”
When their friend brought judge Keith Urban to his knees and the other three to their feet, she also brought the contestants to tears. “We were all standing in the back room crying and screaming,” Kree Harrison says. “She deserved that. She killed it.”
Amber Holcomb says that despite the fact Glover nailed her performance, she was still afraid. “She’s always so nervous for no reason,” Holcomb says. “But she doesn’t understand that she killed it. That was the best of the season.”
True to form, Glover tells Hollywood.com she didn’t expect the audience to react like they did. “I just lost it because I didn’t expect [such a response]. … The screams and the cheers in the crowd was more than I could’ve ever asked for, and I just broke down doing the ugly cry and everything.”
Being in the bottom three last week really prompted Glover to up her game. “I was on the couch like, ‘I have to step it up next week.’ And I felt like this was the perfect time to show them who I am instead of doing the upbeat and hooping and hollering around the stage. I wanted to show people I’m more than just that, and I think it worked. I’m sorry that I keep pausing because I’m still thinking about what I just did! I’m on cloud nine. I can’t believe that just happened to me.”
