Celeb Speak: Mel Gibson Finally Gives An Interview

Mel GibsonWell, well, well. How to handle this delicately. Mel Gibson has obviously said some horrible things and probably done some horrible things to other people. In his first major interview since these horrible things went down, well, he seems a bit calmer. He seems rational. He seems, almost sorry things happened the way they did. There is a long interview after this, dealing mostly with his new movie The Beaver and other more business-y stuff like “will you act again?” and “how do you think this will effect your career?” (your basic bullshit questions), but the real money quote is:

“I’ve never treated anyone badly or in a discriminatory way based on their gender, race, religion or sexuality — period. I don’t blame some people for thinking that though, from the garbage they heard on those leaked tapes, which have been edited. You have to put it all in the proper context of being in an irrationally, heated discussion at the height of a breakdown, trying to get out of a really unhealthy relationship. It’s one terribly, awful moment in time, said to one person, in the span of one day and doesn’t represent what I truly believe or how I’ve treated people my entire life.”

If you’re willing to believe what he was saying on the tapes was absolutely true, in theory, you would have to take his word on this as well. What he said to his ex-girlfriend on those occasions was terrible, but it sounds like he’s the kind of guy who’s able to realize when he needs to shut up and heal. He seems like he wants to move on and begin the healing process. As long as he doesn’t relapse, I’m willing to let him. It takes a lot to man up to your mistakes after all. I’m not saying he’s completely forgiven — I’m just saying that if he wants his room to heal and leave his family alone during this really terrible time, I’ll do it. I’ll move on to the next big thing. I hear James Franco is getting another degree?
