Here’s some news that won’t really surprise anyone: Robert De Niro is pretty old. And, you know, old people say some weird shit sometimes. Granted, a lot of times, the things they say are usually what we’re thinking (obviously there are exceptions — and I’m looking at you, Ted Stevens, that old senator from Alaska who claimed the internet was a series of tubes). But on the whole, if you ever find yourself thinking, “Man, I just wish somebody would tell *enter name here* off,” there’s usually a wrinkled face willing to call them some type of inappropriate name for you.
Anyway, in an interview with Brian Wiliams on Saturday night at the Tribeca Film Festival, De Niro had some choice words for a little ol’ real estate mogul who’s thinking about running for president — a guy by the name of Donald Trump. Well, he didn’t specify Donald, but we all knew what he was thinking and De Niro did kind of confirm it. Williams pressed De Niro on politics, and De Niro had some things to say about “birthers” — those people who are still demanding for Obama’s birth certificate (side note: “birthers” are insane).
“I won’t mention names, but certain people in the news the last couple weeks, just, what are they doing?” De Niro said. “It’s crazy. They’re making statements about people that they don’t even back up. Go get the facts before you start saying things about people.”
Williams asked if he was referring to somebody “on my network on Sunday night” (when Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice airs) and De Niro confirmed it.
“It’s like a big hustle; It’s like being a car salesman,” the actor continued. “Don’t go out there and say things unless you can back them up. How dare you? That’s awful to do. To just go out and speak and say these terrible things? Unless you just wanna get over and get the job. It’s crazy.”
Oh, old people. You’re the best.
