Charles Taylor jailed for 50 years

Taylor became the first former head of state to be convicted by an international war crimes court since World War II when he was found guilty by judges in The Hague, Netherlands last month (Apr12).

On Wednesday (30May12) he was sentenced to 50 years in prison, with Judge Richard Lussick telling Taylor his offences were of the “utmost gravity in terms of scale and brutality”.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell and actress Mia Farrow both gave evidence during the trial and provided a clear link between Taylor and ‘blood diamonds’ he received as payment for arms he provided to fuel civil war in neighbouring Sierra Leone.
