Sloan was inspired to investigate the history of Los Angeles gangs after reading City of Quartz, author Mike Davis' book about Los Angeles. Upon finding his own neighborhood, Athens Park, listed as a gang hot spot, Sloan began to ask other gang members how the organizations got their start in the area. He discovered that few people actually knew the origins of street gang activity, and decided to launch his own research, which led to "Bastards of the Party."
