Crook’s tortoises star in West End play

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor is currently starring in Jezz Butterworth’s West End production, which is set in the English countryside.

And he’s provided reptiles from his own plot of woodland in Essex, England to lend some authenticity to the stageshow at the Apollo Theatre in the British capital.

Speaking on The Andrew Marr Show, he says, “I do have some woodland in Essex. I am an environmentalist… I bought some woodland in Essex three years ago as a longterm conservation project and to take my children there.”

His Jerusalem co-star Mark Rylance adds, “He has a herd of tortoises up there. He provides the tortoises for the play – we have three tortoises in the play and they come from his herd.”
