David Bowie’s ‘The Stars (Are Out Tonight)’ Video with Tilda Swinton is an Explosion of Androgyny

David Bowie and Tilda Swinton in Music Video for "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)"

David Bowie is back to his androgynous roots.

His new video for “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” (below) not only includes a young model dressed as Bowie circa the late ’70s, in a look akin to his style in The Man Who Fell To Earth, but the video also stars Tilda Swinton (the subject of a blog devoted to pointing out that the actress may actually be the same person as Bowie) as Bowie’s character’s extremely run-of-the-mill housewife. The video itself is cinematic and engrossing, directed by seasoned music video director Floria Sigismondi whose works range from Pink’s “Try” to Sigur Ros’ “Leaning Towards Solace” to Bowie’s ’96 video for “Little Wonder.”

We follow Bowie and Swinton’s boring married couple as they are influenced by the beautiful, young stars who grace the covers of tabloids, characters portrayed by famously androgynous models Andrej Pejíc and Saskia de Brauw; the result is manic, but purely Bowie.

And let’s not forget the reason we’re all here: “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” also happens to be a fantastic rock song, perfect for enrapturing new and old Bowie fans. It’s an easy-to-love song with an addictive chorus. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go place my pre-order for the full album, The Next Day, so I can listen to it in a continuous loop as soon as it drops March 12. Other artists may slow down as they get older, but like a fine wine, Bowie’s only getting better with age.
