Death Of A Borough, Part 3: Gaultier at The Brooklyn Museum

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Catwalk to the Sidewalk lands at the Brooklyn Museum on October 25th. He’s a genius, and who doesn’t want to see the cone bra that helped launch Madonna’s career, or the duds the couturier cooked up for Beyoncé? I sure do.

Everyone likes a little low culture mixed in with the highbrow stuff, and more to the point, what good are museums if nobody goes to them? So if shows like this one get people in the doors, how could that be a bad thing?

It’s a little complicated than that. Shows cost money. When little museums are pitted against pop culture to get you in the door, they spend a lot of it. If they don’t get the gate, they loose, way more than you can imagine.

So come see the show, Manhattan, by all means. But don’t colonize us for one afternoon. Come back to this tiny, risk-taking gem of an institution after this mediagenic blockbuster splits. The Brooklyn Museum needs the scratch, and they work hard for it every day of the week. Sometimes they even wear cone bras while they do it.
