‘Desperate Housewives’ V. Nicollette Sheridan: Mistrial Declared

Nicollette SheridanThe lengthy, back-and-forth legal battle between former Desperate Housewives star Nicollette Sheridan and the show’s producers has reached a temporary halt: a mistrial has been declared as a result of a hung jury.

In 2010, Sheridan filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against Housewives creator Marc Cherry, following an instance where she claims to have been fired for reporting to the network that Cherry assaulted her on set. Cherry maintains that didn’t assault her — and that her character’s removal from the show had been planned long before to the alleged incident. Read the full list of the primary allegations here.

On Monday, March 19, a judge declared a mistrial after the jury could not reach a verdict (the jury was split with eight in favor of Sheridan to four). Procedure dictates that the case will be retried — and both parties have expressed willingness to undergo the process one more time.

“You’d think we’d be disappointed, but we’re not,” Sheridan’s attorney stated according to Reuters. “We got the story out. We told the truth. Twelve of our fellow citizens made a judgment. We came up one short. We’ll do the dance again.”

The defense attorney representing the Housewives‘ production company, Touchstone Television, stated, “We’re anxious to move forward with that trial, and we’re confident that we will prevail.”

Although the trial will continue, Desperate Housewives‘ era is coming to a close. The series finale airs on May 13.

Staff editor Michael Arbeiter’s natural state of being can best be described as “mild panic attack.” His earliest memories of growing up in Queens, New York, involve nighttime conversations with a voice from his bedroom wall (the jury’s still out on what that was all about) and a love for classic television that spawned from the very first time he was allowed to watch “The Munsters.” Attending college at SUNY Binghamton, a 20-year-old Michael learned two things: that he could center his future on this love for TV and movies, and that dragons never actually existed — he was kind of late in the game on that one.
