Biography

A director of photography who rose to the forefront of his profession with "Secrets and Lies" (1996), Dick Pope has demonstrated an uncanny flair and understanding for spatial composition, realistic illumination, and the drawing out of the emotional texture of a film in tandem with the director. Of particular note in "Secrets and Lies" was the key teahouse scene when mother and daughter are reunited for the first time. With only two setups and a bare background in semi-soft focus, Pope's lighting and spatial work combined to bring the audience deeply into one of the most archetypal scenes in a very rich movie.
