Ed Sheeran named U.K. chart Artist of the Decade

Ed Sheeran has been named as the U.K. Official Charts Company’s Number 1 Artist of the Decade.

As a result of his success, the British singer-songwriter has been handed a special Official Chart Record Breaker Award, celebrating his achievements during the 2010s.

Celebrating the accolade, he says: “Thank you to everyone who’s supported me over the past 10 years, especially my amazing fans. Here’s to the next 10!”

Since making his chart debut in 2011, the Thinking Out Loud hitmaker has racked up eight number one singles and four number one albums, and 79 weeks in total at the summit of both rundowns.

He also famously “broke the chart” in March 2017 when the release of his album (divide) thrust all 16 tracks into the Official Singles Chart Top 20 in the same week. The situation prompted chart chiefs to alter their rules, limiting artists to only three tracks each in the singles chart.

The singer-songwriter also has three of the top five selling songs of the decade, including the top track Shape of You – which pushes Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk into second place. Ed’s hit Perfect is third, with Luis Fonsi, Justin Bieber, and Daddy Yankee’s Despacito remix at four, and the singer-songwriter’s Perfect completes the top five.

The pop superstar recently became only the fourth artist to pass 1,000 weeks in total on both charts, after Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, and Rihanna, and is the third recipient of the Official Record Breaker Award after Justin Bieber, and Paul McCartney.

Drake has the longest-running number one of the 2010s, with One Dance spending 15 unbroken weeks at the top in 2016.
