Farrow travelled to the occupied territory and Israel as part of a six-day mission in her role as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Gaza has been under an Israeli blockade since the Islamist Hamas movement took control of the region in 2007. Subsequent fighting in the area has left thousands dead and devastated the whole area.
Farrow admits she will forever be haunted by a 12-year-old girl she met during her visit, who lost her whole family in the violent military operations in Gaza last December (08).
She says, “There was fear on her face and she spoke in a tiny voice of the injustice. (She) spoke about about when her house was destroyed, the people who were killed.”
And Farrow is urging world leaders to step in and help make the Middle East conflict a thing of the past.
She adds, “If there is one overriding impression it is how profoundly leadership has screwed up in this region, in Israel and in the Palestinian territory and at what cost to the most vulnerable, the children, the elderly, the innocent. Fear is fear and you don’t want children living in fear.”
