Biography

An ultimately tragic screen personality, brunette Florence Deshon (née Danks) had appeared on stage opposite Mary Boland in My Lady's Dress and in the comedy Seven Chances prior to making her screen debut in 1915. Author Rex Beach reportedly personally selected her to play the villainess in The Auction Block (1917), a murder mystery set on Broadway which he also produced. Deshon earned fine reviews for her portrayal of a man-hungry chorine and would henceforth be typecast as a "bad girl." The vehicles, alas, were mostly poor and her career was decidedly on the wane when she was found dead in her small Greenwich Village, NY, apartment on February 4, 1922. Although there were rumors of suicide, the medical examiner pronounced the death accidental, adding that the only mystery was why "with the apartment especially wired for electricity, Miss Deshon should have used the single gas jet in the room and forgotten to turn it off." ~ Hans J.
