Biography

With her soaring, melodramatic vocals, haunting lyrics, and ethereal presence, Florence Welch redefined the meaning of "rock goddess. " As the lead singer of the wiry rock band Florence + The Machine, it was Welch's distinctive voice that gave heart and soul to the critically acclaimed album Lungs (2009), which featured a mesmerizing collection of ballads, rock songs, and pop-like dance tracks that often spoke of love and loss. The album featured the ubiquitous single "Dog Days Are Over," one of the album's more hopeful songs that went on to be featured on numerous film soundtracks and popular television shows. The album also catapulted Welch into international superstardom as a style icon who was not afraid to mix romantic, wispy dresses with hard leather accents. Following the success of Florence + The Machine's debut album, Welch and her band released their sophomore effort, the equally acclaimed Ceremonials (2011), which again delivered Welch's epic vocals, tormented yet romantic storytelling, and made her one of her generation's most compelling and original artists.
