FTC: Kids easily access adult entertainment

In a report released Wednesday, the Federal Trade Commission revealed its findings regarding the entertainment industry’s efforts to keep adult material away from kids: it’s not working.

Though the FTC did find that the marketing of adult materials to children is on the decline, the commission–using “undercover” underage shoppers–also found that kids are still able to easily purchase tickets to R-rated films, M-rated (mature) video games and CDs with a parental-advisory label on the cover.

“There has been almost no progress by any of the [movie, music and video gaming] industries in improving their self-regulatory efforts to increase retail compliance,” the report said.

This latest FTC report follows similar findings in September 2000, when the commission blasted the entertainment industry for its shameless promotion of adult entertainment to children.
