Biography

Socially conscious playwright George Sklar got his start in 1934 with Stevedore. Later he founded the Theater Union to produce plays aimed at American society's economically oppressed. In 1932, Merry-Go-Round, the play he co-wrote with Albert Maltz, was adapted into the film Afraid to Talk. In 1943, Sklar co-penned the screenplay for First Comes Courage. In the early '50s, Sklar's political views got him blacklisted.
